MLB 4:00pm - Seattle Mariners @ Oakland Athletics: Seattle -108
Analysis:
Sometimes when you shop around you get a bargain and we have a HUGE
bargain price here to back an outstanding young pitcher in Seattle's
Felix Hernandez at basically even money against a virtual unknown
rookie for Oakland in Josh Outman. This is one of the biggest pitching
mismatches of the early season that I have seen so far particularly
when you think about the fact the price tag for King Felix in this game
is just as a small favourite and incredibly this game actually opened
with Seattle at even money. The Mariners are quickly putting last
season's disaster behind them and have started 2009 off very well.
Hernandez was simply phenomenal in his first start against Minnesota as
he gave up just one run in eight innings en route to a 6-1 Seattle win.
Minnesota simply couldn't hit him and that is going to prove to be once
again challenging for a very mediocre Athletics offense. King Felix is
3-1 in his L4 starts against Oakland and the one pitcher that bested
him in that lone loss was Joe Blanton who is no longer with the A's.
Meanwhile, Josh Outman is in his rookie season with Oakland and is
making his first ever start in the majors today and what a tough
matchup for him in his very first outing. Outman did have a couple
bullpen stints with the Athletics in 2008 and didn't have overly
impressive numbers. He gave up 14 runs in 25
innings pitched last year with Oak... [More]

NCAA Tournament Semifinal 6:00pm - Michigan State vs. Connecticut: Under 134
Analysis:
This is going to be a low scoring ugly hard fought defensive battle. Forget the 130's or maybe even the 120's because the final total of this game could be in the 110's range when all is said and done. These are two teams that will be hard pressed to find easy shots in this game. Everything will be contested. Neither team presses very often. Neither team turns the ball over very much meaning very few opportunities for easy transition baskets. Neither team fouls a lot which means very little points coming at the line with the clock stopped. Both teams will run time off the shot clock with their possessions. So where are the baskets going to come from? We must also keep in mind that both teams will have to adjust to playing in a cavernous environment for a basketball game in a football type of stadium the size of Ford Field which is a situation where your shooting eye can really be thrown off because the players aren't used to playing in such a big stadium where gauging shot ranges becomes much more difficult and that could result in even more scoring droughts during the game some of which could last for a couple minutes in addition to all the defensive elements in this game. All of these factors should add up to an under and the chances are good that it could come fairly easy. The only way I see this game going over the total is if it goes to overtime and we'll take our ch... [More]

NBA 8:00pm - Portland Trail Blazers @ Oklahoma City Thunder: Oklahoma City +5
Analysis:
We cashed an easy one with Portland over Utah earlier this week in
Portland's last game at the Rose Garden and just to show how wonky
sports handicapping can be, we are now going against that same Blazers
team in their next game tonight in Oklahoma City against the Thunder
but this spot fits perfectly like a glove. Portland may be feeling a
bit fat and happy as of late and that might be their downfall tonight
coming off 3 amazing performances in their last 3 games beating the
Suns by 20 points, the Grizzlies by 20 points and in their last game
humiliating the struggling Utah Jazz by 21 points. That is 3
consecutive 20+ point wins. Impressive for sure but that being said,
those wins were all at home for Portland where the Blazers are 31-7 SU.
Now they have to play on the road against a non-playoff team in
Oklahoma City and this has the potential to be a big letdown spot for
them and they could be walking into a trap here especially considering
just how tough Oklahoma City makes it for the visiting opposition on
their home court as the Thunder are a strong 21-16 ATS at home this
season and have been consistently producing stronger performances at
home all season long. Combine that with the fact this Portland team is
still having problems on the road. The Blazers have a losing record of
16-20 SU on the highway this season. That is a major home/road
di...

NBA 8:00pm - Cleveland Cavaliers @ Orlando Magic: Under 188
Analysis:
It's time for another Cavs/Magic showdown and you know what that means
if you've been following my selections all season, it's time to go back
to the under well with two of the better defensive teams in the NBA who
play low scoring games against one another every time out. We've cashed
three unders already this season with Cleveland taking on Orlando.
Those were all regular wagers so why have I stepped this one up to the
top play level?! Because both teams are likely to play this game toward
our methods and an even bigger emphasis on defense will be placed for
both teams than in their previous meetings. We also have the added
dimension of a tired Cleveland team having played last night in
Washington coming in to Orlando tonight and they won't want to run much
at all in order to conserve energy for this huge game. They will look
to slow the pace down to a crawl and take time off the shot clock in
the half court as much as possible and that helps our under all that
much more.
Mike Brown and Stan Van Gundy are both looking to get their teams
playing well defensively prior to the playoffs where defense more than
anything else wins games and as a result there will be emphasis on both
sides to play strong on defense with the chances being high these teams
may see one another again in the playoffs where whoever can make more
stops usually goes farther in the pos...

Incredibly we are only a week away from the start of yet another Major
League Baseball season. I'm right in the middle of preparing my notes
and reading on all the teams as we get ready for the start of the 2009
season. I'm going to be adding to this throughout the next several days
but I will start by giving some of my regular season win total
recommended bets on certain teams where I see good value in betting
them either over or under the set number of regular season wins for the
season. So keep checking this note as I will add to it between now and
Monday when the MLB season begins. All my regular season win total bets
are 1\4 (0.25) unit plays. We keep them very small because there are
just so many unpredictable elements that can take place in a long 162
game MLB season. All regular MLB game wagers during the season which
starts next week will either be regular 1 unit wagers or 2 unit *TOP
PLAY* wagers as they are for all other sports as well.
We will start by taking a look at two teams today, one in the American
League and the other in the National League, who could be about to show
some improvement in the 2009 season and for the one team where futility
has been their mantra for decades, a little bit of success can't come a
moment too soon:
1. Kansas City Royals: Over 75.5 Wins
Analysis:
On a brief side note, Kauffman Stadium (one of the most picturesque
ballparks in MLB in my opinion) is undergoing a bit of a...
