The Big Ten football conference has reverted back to its underachieving bowl ways with one more game to redeem itself.
Make sure you check out the latest bowl odds at
BroburySports.com, which continue up to the Jan. 10 national title game between Auburn and Oregon.
The bowl season started out promising for the Big Ten. Iowa beat Missouri in the Insight Bowl (27-24) and Illinois had a big win (38-14) over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. Both of those games were against Big 12 opponents and ‘covered’ the spread.
Then New Year’s Day came, which will live in infamy. The Big Ten lost all five of its games (2-3 ATS), including Wisconsin 21-19 to TCU in the Rose Bowl. That’s a Mountain West Conference winning in the Big Ten’s crown jewel.
The three games against the SEC clearly showed who was the dominant conference. Michigan got blown out by Mississippi State (52-14) and the same for Michigan State versus Alabama (49-7). Penn State lost (37-24) to Florida as well, although that was closer than the score indicates.
The Big Ten has one chance to redeem itself Tuesday night. Ohio State will play SEC Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl as 3 ½-point favorites. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and four of his teammates are lucky to be playing in this game after recruiting violations. They’re all suspended for the first five games of next season.
I think Ohio State goes down, capping the Big Ten’s big bo...

The New York Jets and coach Rex Ryan avoided the ‘agony of de-feet’ for now by backing into the playoffs.
The Jets lost 38-34 at the Chicago Bears yesterday, but made the postseason after Jacksonville was upset (20-17) by Washington. New England is the AFC East champion after winning (34-3) in Buffalo.
Make sure you check out the latest NFL Future odds at
BroburySports.com, which will be updated shortly.
Ryan was under as much pressure in Chicago as any coach in recent memory. News broke around the world last week that he and his wife posted foot fetish videos a few years ago and are quite possibly swingers based on an alt.com profile.
The foot videos by themselves aren’t a big deal and could be laughed off with a few jokes. However it does show poor judgment uploading videos to YouTube when you're trying to get your first head coaching job.
The swinger thing is a far more touchier subject, although the mainstream media has avoided it for the most part.
Ryan can make all these problems go away by another deep playoff run. If they go ‘one-and-done,’ then the writers and fans will look for a scapegoat and ‘foot-gate’ will be at the top of the list.
That means more digging by reporters, and if more sordid information comes to light, it could get a lot worse for Ryan.
Agony of de-feet? You betcha!

The Orlando Magic’s NBA title hopes have gone from poor to dismal after two blockbuster trades on Saturday.
The first was getting Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Earl Clark from Phoenix in exchange for Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat. Turkoglu used to be a very good player for Orlando, but was replaced by Carter. GM Otis Smith has now reversed his thinking on that one.
The other trade involved less players, but was equally as big. Gilbert Arenas was acquired from Washington in exchange for Rashard Lewis. Both guys had long term contracts that no one wanted and Arenas is the bigger talent, but much bigger risk at this point in their careers.
The NBA Future odds have been updated at
BroburySports.com. Orlando is 5/1 to win the East, way behind Miami (-125) and Boston (+110).
The Orlando trades were made in mind of winning a title. Center Dwight Howard will be a free agent in 2012 and they want to keep the big man happy and make sure he doesn’t bolt the franchise like Shaquille O’Neal back in the day.
Howard and point guard Jameer Nelson are set in the starting lineup. Brandon Bass was made a recent starter at power forward and will stick. Turkoglu should start at small forward even with his limitations defensively. Richardson should start at the ‘two’, with Arenas the offensively minded sixth man.
That nucleus isn’t any better than the pre-trade ve...

The free agent signing of outfielder Jayson Werth by the Washington Nationals looks like one of the worst in recent history.
Werth is a 31-year-old right fielder who hit 27 home runs and had 85 RBIs for Philadelphia last year. He also had a career-high OPS of .920. He’s good defensively and can even play centerfield if needed.
That effort made him one of the most attractive free agents on the market and Washington rewarded him with a seven-year, $126 million deal. It’s a superstar-like contract for a guy who has made one All-Star team and is not even considered a No. 3 or No. 4 hitter.
That’s a major overpayment for GM Mike Rizzo, whose team won 69 games last year and isn’t close to contending. There’s a good chance Washington looks to trade him in a couple of years, with Rizzo’s name forever being linked to this bad contract. That’s especially true when he’s still being paid big money at 38-years-old!
Werth may ultimately wish he had signed with a team like Boston for one less year, but a chance to be in the playoffs every season. Of course, that extra $20-30 million he made will cheer him up quick.
The only people happy about this contract are guys like Carl Crawford and Adrian Beltre, who are still trying to cash-in on free agent deals. Their price tag just went way up.
Werth’s signing will not affect MLB Future Odds at
BroburySports.com, but the other free agent deals...

The fate of receiver Randy Moss in Nashville, Tennessee is like the same bad country song played over and over again.
Moss’ magical mystery tour started in New England, but he shot his way out of town from his team of three-plus years. Moss didn’t feel he was a big enough piece of the offense and it was affecting his impending free agent status.
The next stop was Minnesota and the Vikings went 1-3 with Moss before Brad Childress finally got sick of his act and released him. Childress was later fired himself and the whole Moss affair was a big reason.
More indignity has followed Moss to Tennessee and the team is 0-3 since picking him up. The only good news is he was free, unlike the third round pick Minnesota paid.
The situation in Tennessee is getting bad, losing 20-0 at Houston yesterday to fall to 5-6. Quarterback Vince Young is out for the season. Backup Kerry Collins (calf) could be the starter this week if he’s healthy enough and he’s a lot better than Sunday’s starter, rookie Rusty Smith.
Smith had three picks and just 138 passing yards yesterday. Moss had 23 yards receiving and hasn’t had more than 30 in his last five games. This is not what he was expecting after leaving one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Tom Brady.
Moss’ numbers for the year are 23 catches for 339 yards. That’s going to cost him a lot of money in the offseason and will likely limit him to a one-year deal.
Meanwhile, New Englan...

The Miami Heat have had a shocking start to the season, showing serious chinks in the armor of what was thought to be an unbeatable team.
The Heat were made the heavy NBA favorite after LeBron James and Chris Bosh decided to join Dwyane Wade and ‘take their talents to South Beach.’
BroburySports.com still has Miami favored to win the NBA title at +160. The Lakers are +180 after losing two straight. Boston (+400) and Orlando (+800) are next.
Miami’s 6-4 start has them in third place in the Southeast Division behind Orlando and Atlanta. A quick look at their recent games shows some potentially fatal flaws.
The Heat are 2-3 straight-up and 0-5 against the spread in their last five games. The ‘over’ has gone 5-0 with the defense allowing 102.6 PPG. Wade and James are great individual defenders, but Miami is getting pushed around underneath even with the last four games at home.
Bosh is a very good player, but isn’t physical and shuns the post when he can. They’re getting little from the point guard position with Carlos Arroyo, with the offense mostly going through James. Zydrunas Ilgauskas has replaced Joel Anthony at center, but ‘Big Z’ is another guy who prefers to shoot jump-shots.
The only tough guy on the team is Udonis Haslem and he’s coming off the bench.
These problems will only get more magnified in the playoffs when the pace slows down and half-court offense reign...

The TCU Horned Frogs didn’t make up any ground in the BCS, but they made a big statement on Saturday with a 47-7 win at Utah.
TCU is 10-0 and No. 3 in the BCS behind Oregon and Auburn. They’re just ahead of fellow small conference school Boise State (No. 4) and that’s the way it should be.
BroburySports.com has updated the college football national title odds and Oregon is 1/1, followed by TCU (5/2), Auburn (3/1) and Boise State (9/2). It’s very noteworthy that TCU is ahead of Auburn.
TCU is absolutely crushing its MWC foes. In six games, they’re scoring 39.3 PPG and allowing 3.8 PPG. The MWC isn’t the toughest conference in the country, but BYU and Air Force are decent teams and Utah was No. 5 in the country before the beat down.
Boise State has been doing an almost equal number on its WAC foes, but that conference isn’t as good. Boise State’s Kellen Moore gets a lot of deserved credit nationally, but TCU’s Andy Dalton is great in his own right with a nation-leading 39 career wins.
Against Utah, Dalton went 21-of-26 for 355 passing yards and three touchdowns. He’s the perfect leader for a team with a great rushing attack (10th nationally) and defense (first nationally).
Boise State did beat TCU in the Fiesta Bowl last year (17-10), but I’m not sure the result wouldn’t be opposite this season.
Regardless, TCU has had the more impressive year and deserves to be in t...

Another week of the NFL
season is over and that means there’s another drama brewing for Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre.
Favre reportedly has two
fractures in his ankle and could miss this week’s game at New England. That would end his 291 consecutive game streak in
the regular season.
A lot of people think this
is the perfect time to cut the cord and give the ball to backup Tarvaris
Jackson. I’m not one of them.
I don’t care if the
41-year-old is playing at 60% healthy and hobbling around there. This Minnesota team sold its soul to the devil by begging Favre
to come out of retirement one more time, and paying him close to $20 Million for
the pleasure. They then increased their desperation by getting Randy Moss back
from New England.
Part of the reason was
ticket sales and general fan interest as the Vikings are still trying to
wrangle a new... [More]

The Boise State Broncos
appear to have a big problem after ranking third in the initial BCS Standings.
The WAC conference school is behind both Oklahoma and Oregon despite being ranked second in the AP and Coaches
Poll. It was projected that Boise State would be ranked first in the BCS, but the computer rankings hurt them more than
expected.
There are several major
conference schools with undefeated records. The top ones in the BCS are No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Oregon, No. 4 Auburn,
No. 6 LSU and No. 7 Michigan State.
All of these teams can’t
go undefeated. For example, LSU is at Auburn this Saturday as 6 ½-point ‘dogs. However, if two major
conference squads are perfect for the year, the computer ranking will likely move
them ahead of Boise State due to strength of schedule.
Voters may also lower
Boise State as they play weak WAC teams
like Louisi... [More]

I don’t care what the
polls say – the Alabama Crimson Tide are still the best team in the SEC.
The new AP poll is out and
the Tide have fallen to No. 8 after their stunning 35-21 loss at South Carolina. They’re also third in the SEC West.
No. 7 Auburn is the
top-ranked team in the conference, with No. 9 LSU, No. 10 South Carolina and
No. 12 Arkansas close behind. The Tim Tebow-less Florida Gators have dropped to
No. 22.
BroburySports.com
will be updating its SEC title odds shortly and they’re sure to be
interesting.
Alabama got physically beat by South Carolina on Saturday. It was a signature win by coach Steve
Spurrier’s team. There are no excuses for Alabama and coach Nick Saban, but it did come at the end
of a brutal three-game stretch that included Arkansas and Florida.

The Minnesota Twins have
been the New York Yankees’ whipping boys for a long time, but could this be the
year they finally get revenge?
Minnesota will be a solid series underdog at BroburySports.com.
The Yanks beat the Twins in the 2003, 2004 and 2009 playoffs and have also
dominated them in the regular season.
Despite that, there are a
few reasons I think this year could be different.
1) Home field advantage. New York had a better record by one-game but got stuck in
the wild-card. Minnesota had the best home record in the AL this year (53-28). New York has lost their last three ALDS series as the
wild-card going back to 1995.
2) This is not a typical
Yankees team. New
York finished
the season 8-17, blowing the AL East race to Tampa Bay.
They also lost Saturday and Sunday at Bosto... [More]

The troubles are mounting for 40-year-old quarterback Brett Favre and you have to ask, is this what we’re going to see all season?
Favre was 23-of-34 for 201 yards yesterday in a 28-14 home win over Detroit. However, he had two more interceptions and Minnesota won via the running game with Adrian Peterson (160 yards).
Favre now has six picks on the year after having just seven during last year’s regular season. His quarterback rating is 60.4 and the Vikings (1-2) are behind Chicago and Green Bay in the NFC North.
I haven’t seen such bad performances from Favre since his cameo in the movie, There’s Something About Mary.
Minnesota has a bye-week coming up and is still a respectable 6/1 to win the NFC at
BroburySports.com. The oddsmakers clearly haven’t given up on them yet.
Favre reportedly suffered a stinger against Detroit. He’s also complained of ankle and elbow injuries. There always seems to be an excuse when he doesn’t play well, or he blames it on team injuries like star wide receiver Sidney Rice being out.
The reality is Favre put on the pressure on himself again by sitting out all of training camp and then finally coming back at the last minute when he got a raise.
He just isn’t good enough anymore to overcome all these obstacles and those 6/1 odds look ...

We’re
only two weeks into the NFL season and a couple of teams are getting desperate
already.
The
Carolina Panthers are starting rookie Jimmy Clausen at quarterback over Matt
Moore. The Buffalo Bills have swapped Trent Edwards for Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Carolina is a three-point home dog vs. Cincinnati at BroburySports.com, while
Buffalo is 13-point road ‘dogs at New England.
There is
more pressure for coaches to win than ever, but making a quarterback change
after two games is a sign of desperation.
After
all, weren’t the mini-camps and preseason games supposed to be the evaluation
process? Have the coaches really learned anything in these two games to warrant
a switch?
In the
case of Buffalo, it makes no sense. Everyone knows Fitzpatrick is a
journeyman backup. Edwa... [More]

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is the poster child for the phrase ‘some people never learn.’
The Jets will host the New England Patriots on Sunday and
BroburySports.com already has them listed as two-point home ‘dogs.
Ryan and the Jets’ players bragged all offseason about their Super Bowl destiny and they turned the HBO Hard Knocks show into a giant ego fest.
Predictably, the Jets crashed and burned in their Monday night opener vs. Baltimore (10-9). It was an offensive effort that wasn’t worthy of a Pop Warner game.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez (74 passing yards) should be embarrassed and limit his nightclub parting to neighboring Connecticut, where he’s less recognizable.
Ryan should be eating a huge piece of humble pie, but instead he’s talking about Darrelle Revis shutting down Randy Moss this week and how New York is still on track for a title.
New England is coming off a solid home win over Cincinnati. Tom Brady will certainly find the going much tougher against the Jets’ D, but he won’t have to deal with nose tackle Kris Jenkins (torn ACL, out for the season).
Another home loss could be one the Jets never recover from. They’re at Miami and Buffalo the next two weeks and have tough Minnesota and Green Bay visiting in October.
The Jets can’t count on backing into the playoffs again like last year. Maybe someone should give Ryan a reminder and try to tone him...

The declining fortunes of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart have made it open season on former USC quarterbacks.
Leinart looks like he’ll lose his starting job to Derek Anderson in the quest to replace Kurt Warner. Leinart just doesn’t have what it takes to be an elite NFL starter and Arizona is right to pull the plug.
BroburySports.com has Arizona at +220 to win the NFC West, only trailing favored San Francisco (-140). The win total is 7 ½, with the ‘over’ favored at -140.
USC bashers have taken this opportunity to get their licks in, claiming that all USC quarterbacks have been busts. The reality is that’s not true.
Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Injury problems have hurt his effectiveness, but he could bounce back strong this year with the receiving combo of Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco.
