Big Ten a big bowl failure

The Big Ten football conference has reverted back to its underachieving bowl ways with one more game to redeem itself.

Make sure you check out the latest bowl odds at BroburySports.com, which continue up to the Jan. 10 national title game between Auburn and Oregon.

The bowl season started out promising for the Big Ten. Iowa beat Missouri in the Insight Bowl (27-24) and Illinois had a big win (38-14) over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. Both of those games were against Big 12 opponents and ‘covered’ the spread.

Then New Year’s Day came, which will live in infamy. The Big Ten lost all five of its games (2-3 ATS), including Wisconsin 21-19 to TCU in the Rose Bowl. That’s a Mountain West Conference winning in the Big Ten’s crown jewel.

The three games against the SEC clearly showed who was the dominant conference. Michigan got blown out by Mississippi State (52-14) and the same for Michigan State versus Alabama (49-7). Penn State lost (37-24) to Florida as well, although that was closer than the score indicates.

The Big Ten has one chance to redeem itself Tuesday night. Ohio State will play SEC Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl as 3 ½-point favorites. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and four of his teammates are lucky to be playing in this game after recruiting violations. They’re all suspended for the first five games of next season.

I think Ohio State goes down, capping the Big Ten’s big bowl failure.
