The New York Jets and coach Rex Ryan avoided the ‘agony of de-feet’ for now by backing into the playoffs.

The Jets lost 38-34 at the Chicago Bears yesterday, but made the postseason after Jacksonville was upset (20-17) by Washington. New England is the AFC East champion after winning (34-3) in Buffalo.

Ryan was under as much pressure in Chicago as any coach in recent memory. News broke around the world last week that he and his wife posted foot fetish videos a few years ago and are quite possibly swingers based on an alt.com profile.

The foot videos by themselves aren’t a big deal and could be laughed off with a few jokes. However it does show poor judgment uploading videos to YouTube when you're trying to get your first head coaching job.

The swinger thing is a far more touchier subject, although the mainstream media has avoided it for the most part.

Ryan can make all these problems go away by another deep playoff run. If they go ‘one-and-done,’ then the writers and fans will look for a scapegoat and ‘foot-gate’ will be at the top of the list.

That means more digging by reporters, and if more sordid information comes to light, it could get a lot worse for Ryan.
