Here are some stats that have been compiled on both the Penguins and Redwings throughout the first 3 series of the playoffs.
RecordsThe Penguins are 8-1 in their last 9 playoff
games including a 4 game winning streak on the road. Detroit is 7-2 in
their last 9 playoff games and have also won 5 in a row at home.
Playoff Trends
In the playoffs each team starts the sereies playing 2 games at home
and 2 on the road. Detroit have won all their game #1's at home and
are a combined 5-1 in the first 2 games of each series.
Pittsburgh on the road
were all over the place winning the first 2 in Carolina, losing the
first 2 in Washington and splitting the first 2 in Philly.
Based on
the above facts it's almost a sure bet that Pitsburgh will probably not be
leaving Detroit with a 2-0 series lead and it is highly likely Detroit
will probably win game 1. What happens in Game 2 if Detroit does win
game 1 is anybody's guess.
As impressive as Detroit's 5-1 home record
is in game's 1+2, Pittsburgh's is better. The Penguins are a perfect
6-0 at home in their first 2 games at home, while Detroit have split
the first 2 road game's twice and won the first 2 once (in Columbus). The Red wings are
3-0 on the road in game 4's so if the Wings lose game 3 it might be
wise to layoff game 4 because you'll be going against two 3-0 trends for both teams.
Back-to-back statistics
Games 1 and 2 occur on back to back nights. Looking back to this
season the Red wings not including shootout losses (not real losses) have only lost back-to-back once out of 15 times this season. The
Red wings had good success winning back-to-back games turning the task 6
out of 15 times. The Penguins in 14 back-to-back games this season
split 11/14 games. 2/14 back to back games were both losses and only 1
resulted in 2 wins.
Keep in mind that the only back to back win the
penguins had was in the playoffs against Washington so take that 11/14
split statistic with a grain of salt.
The Final 3 gamesBeyond game 4 things get a bit backwards. In games 5,6,7, the Red Wings are 3-0 at home and 0-1 on the road, While the Penguins
are 0-2 at home, and 3-0 on the road. Something's gonna have to give. What gives is anyone's guess
Win/Loss TrendsPittsburgh havn't lost 3 in a row since early Feburary and the last time they lost 2 consecutive games at home was December 30th so if the wings win game 3 in pittsburgh or win 2 in a row anywhere in this series, if might be a good idea to fade them the next game.
Detroit haven't lost 2 consectuive games on the road since January 27th so if the Wings lose game 3 in PIttsburgh, maybe you should ride them in game 4....but then again pittsburgh's never lost the first 2 games of a home series, so maybe you should just layoff game 4 altogether?
Game 7Game 7 in a Stanley cup finals usually always go to the home team. 14 game 7's have been played in the SC finals and 12 have them have gone to the home team. Last time the road team won game 7 was in 1971, Since then the home team is on a 6-0 run.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So based on the above info, this is how I predict the series could go
Game 1: Detroit
Game 2: Pittsburgh
Game 3: Pittsburgh
Game 4: Detroit
Game 5: Detroit
Game 6: Pittsburgh
Game 7: Detroit
