Hey guys been a crazy 2 weeks for me put in 65 hr weeks and finally got to relax tonight. I have got to stop betting fckn hockey!!!!

The Rebels come into the tourney opener playing their best basketball of the year according to coach Kruger. The main reason is that Willis the Rebel senior and captain has finally got his swagger back after dealing with adversity for most of the year. He has returned to score 18 pts per game and has hit 65% from 3 in his past 5 games.

The Rebels also re-committed to extra shooting practice, after a horrible shooting slump in Jan and Feb where they were shooting around 30% from the 3 point line!!

The only concern is that Illinois has the length to be disruptive like the Aztecs but at a much less talent level.  The Illini have a solid player in McCamey who avgs 14.8 per and 6 assists, along with a glossy 45% from 3 point land. The problem is most games he is the only one who shows up!!  The team is only 6-10 over the second half of the season and struggled in the big 10 tourney.

The Rebels will be the quicker team and if they hit open shots I see no problem with them covering the -2. If ILL comes to play and focuses on perimeter defense for which they were 2nd in the Big 10 then I can see an upset. Which team will show up and be hungrier??  The loss last year to N. Iowa in the opener for the Rebels was very painful according to Willis. Look for him to be the difference maker on both ends of the floor, add the fact that Bellfield the floor general has improved on his wrist injury!!   UNLV  ML

Thanks, the ML play is because of my same concern!!  They have played against some good teams and have competed in most.

Mccamey's last game possibly and i think he does well tomorrow...this team has more talent then UNLV in my mind, but having only talent does not mean anything. They look very sloppy at times ( who am i kidding, a lot of the time ) and can not hold a lead ever. If Tisdale stays out of foul trouble and Mccamey plays like he can, its going to be very tough to beat them. Richmond might be a factor too.....

with that being said, i dont know if i can back the ILLINI tomorrow....but im not sure i would want to bet against them

I'm going with the Illini +3 b.5. I have a difficult time backing a team that at times is very inconsistent from the FT line and the Rebels fit that play.  As the tourney has already indicated, guard play leads the way and I think with the ball in McCamey's hands, this will limit UNLV's propensity towards garnering steals and converting easy fastbreak opportunities, Illinois should remain close throughout.

Illinois has struggled down the stretch this year and their performance against Michigan in the Big10 quarterfinals typified their season.  Illinois looked slow against UM's guards in the 2H, failed to rotate to the weakside perimeter player (I think Michigan attempted at least 15 3's in the 2H alone; this is the sole reason Michigan made their run to close the game) and looked slow in their transition defense when Darrius Morris and Tim Hardaway, Jr. penetrated into the paint allowing for all those uncontested 3-point attmepts.  If UNLV decides to push their offense in transition, Bellfield and Marshall will look to get Willis and Stanback cutting towards the paint from the wings. While I think this is Illinois' biggest weakness, I also have to look no further than UNLV's last game to see where the Illini will exploit what I perceive as the Rebels weakness.  SDSU did an excellent job of rotating their half court sets and finding the weakside defender cheating into the paint, allowing SDSU several and-1 chances after converting in the lane.  Without question, SDSU's frontcourt dominated the Rebels throughout. With Illinois' size, I anticipate this pattern to continue, where Tisdale and Davis are very good at scoring with the paint and both are adequate at shooting FT's (although let me clarify Leonard/White > than the Davis/Tisdale combo).  I believe Illinois will want to establish their inside game early, primarily through Tisdale as his size, length and athleticism will give F Quintrell Thomas and/or C Brice Massamba fits.  With the Rebels having to collapse down into the paint to protect the lack of size in their frontcourt, this should allow Illinois to find their range from beyond the arc.  The Illini average 18 attempts from 3, making seven per contest.  With all this said, you could really draw a line through each of these teams statistical performances this year. And that's why if there is one player who may be this game's unknown x-factor, the ideal candidate is Bill Cole.  When given the minutes, Cole can provide 8 points, 5 rebounds and plays sound defense where his height can disrupt looks from in close.  Cole also shoots over 80% from the FT line and can sub for either Davis or Tisdale.  The unknown for Illinois is D.J. Richardson.  He has been ice cold since mid-February and he plays critical minutes.  If he is not hitting his shots and cannot give Illinois a potential third scorer, their chances of victory decrease drastically.

This will be only the third time that I have backed the Illini this year, both prior instances as a road dog (3/1/11 @ Purdue +9.5, 67-75 and 2/5/11 @ NW +2, 70-71).  I would tend to agree with your mL play but at this point in the year, certain situations dictate that I must take the points.  And while Illinois has struggled to close games out this year, I think Illinois will embrace the pressure and keep this game a one possession game late.

As for intangibles, I rank Kruger and Weber low on the coaching efficiency rating and having watched a lot of Big10 games, Weber is known to burn timeouts inexcusably, which are valuable this time of year. No real advantage either way.

Drifter, I'm sure you might not give too much weight to my analysis. I do recall going back and forth with you earlier in the season when the Rebels traveled to play Illinois St in December. I backed the Redhawks +9.5 in that game and they were absolutely destroyed. But tomorrow's matchups offer more value with Illinois but, I think your UNLV mL may cash too.

UNLV 61, Illinois 60 .

GL with your play drifter44 .

You're a UNLV Homer like Sharpstick is. Reality will set in someday. I couldn't back the Rebels if you gave me your season tickets. And if you gave me 8-10 points against Kansas then I say your nuts ! You couldn't give me 20 points to take UNLV. I'll keep fading UNLV because that's where the money is.

ESPN Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas both like Illinois to beat UNLV. I have to go with the Wiseguys choices. UNLV sucks!

I thought I heard Vitale pick UNLV.  Then again he probably went both ways.  I know Gottlieb took UNLV and Digger took Illinois.

To me, this is Illinois' game to lose.  UNLV is going to have a good effort and they're well coached.  It comes down to whether or not Illinois shits the bed.  If they play like they're capable they are too much for UNLV to handle.  Just that they haven't done it too much lately.  Flip a coin.

I did better than both those clowns in my bracket last year and so did thousands others!!!!!

As I said, Vitale picked UNLV.  I saw it with my own eyes.  It was Digger Phelps that picked Illinois.

This game is more about Illinois than UNLV.  Illinois has way more talent, it's just a question of whether they can pull it together and play a 40 minute game without the long lapse that has cost them many games.

I went back and checked and noticed that you have only started one thread and that was to fade Marc Lawrence. Why not start your own thread with your own thoughts own analysis and picks. I have posted all year on Rebel reports and I have faded the spread on at least 5 or 6 occasions and lost by under estimating this team. Do your own shit homie, you sound like a fckn teenager!!!

Between you a Sharpstick, I don't know which one of you gets the Biggest Homer of the Year award for UNLV. I quit supporting UNLV years ago and gave up my scholarship floor seats because of those dumbass Board of Regents that run the school. With UNLV losing tonight was icing on the cake and will celebrate their loss with me making money against them.

Like I said, Illinois way more talent.  Illinois has at least couple of guys that will get a look at the next level and a freshman that was benched who will play the next level.  UNLV a team that was well coached and overachieved, in a very overrated conference.  They just don't play the rigors of a Big 10 schedule or the non-conf schedule that Illinois does.
