Kobe Vs. Jordan

Kobe has one more ring to go and he will have the same amount of Jordan ( 6 rings ). At what point will people say he is the greatest player ever? He is still somewhat young at 31 and you have to think that his chances of winning another ring or even more are pretty darn good.

Jordan will always be the greatest to me, no matter what others accomplish, but you have to give credit where credit is due. Although it is obvious that Kobe has copied Jordans game. When he was standing on the table and celebrating, I immediately thought of Jordan doing the same thing.

Like him or hate him, Kobe is the best player in basketball today.

Lebron is not even in the discussion. It will be almost impossible for him to ever catch up to these guys.

To compare anyone to Jordan truly shows a lack of understanding of anything concerning athletics. You can break down the Kobe/Jordan comparison by stats as well. You can also break them down by career accomplishments. The only way you are ever going to be able to compare Kobe to Jordan is team titles.

If thats how you want to compare individual players then I just can't listen.

Kobe's great and he's now officially a legend. It can't be denied. So many people routing only against him and he did it twice in a row with a pretty good percentage of official haters.

Rings don't determine who's a better player, just who had a better career.  If Kobe proved anything last night (in comparison with Jordan) it was that he wasn't Jordan.

I believe Kobe has opened up a legacy where people will say, "that kid is the next Kobe", simply because living up to what Jordan did is just too much to place on any individual, even Jordan himself (think the wizards Jordan)

Some people say that the closet thing to Jordan is the 1998 Jordan. lol  I will say the closest person we have ever seen to Jordan is Kobe.  Frankly, that's an accomplishment within itself.

When he has the same amount of rings as Jordan, then I will give him credit. And I hope that never happens.  To me he is still the bitch the broke up the Lakers and got away with rape.

What exactly does kobe do better than jordan? Offensively or defensively? Its not just about rings and if it was jordan still has 1 more and never lost in finals. Also i know this doesnt mean as much but the bulls win 8 in a row if jordan doesnt go play baseball.Sorry hakeem and drexler but your not beating the bulls.

Jordan !  Kobe #2  no matter how many rings he gets.

kobe era has zone defense where he get double or triple team

jordan era you can't double or triple team him that illegal defense

if jordan play today game which he did but as an old michael he didn't do that well

well plus he's playing for the wizard.

bottom line kobe is the best since jordan they both playing

at the same level

Athletes from other sports are compared to Jordan (not Kobe).

But to put this in proper perspective and I have posted this many times throughout covers.

MJ was voted the top athlete of the past 100 years.......he was deemed greater than Babe Ruth...greater than Ali....Jesse Owens......everybody!!!

And while Kobe was voted athlete of the decade in the NBA....he was not even deemed to be the top athlete of this past decade....that honor went to (1) Tiger Woods (2) Roger Federer (3) Lance Armstrong (4) Michael Phelps and (5)  Tom Brady and/or Peyton Manning........no even in the top 6 otr 7 for top athlete of the decade.......................BUT   folks keep trying to say he is nipping on MJ's heels......who is deemed the top athlete of all time...not just NBA...but all sports!

But keeping this in the NBA

1.   MJ has 10 regular season scoring titles  (Kobe has 1)  MJ avg over 30 ppg in 8 seasons

2.   MJ has five regular season MVPs....(Kobe has 1)   they say MJ should have won more MVP awards --- they got tired & bored of giving him the award every year

3.   MJ led the league in steals 3 seasons and is regarded as the league's BEST perimiter defender of all time....and is 2nd all time in steals.

4.   MJ won a defensive player of the year award (Kobe has 0)....and MJ won it during an era when Rodman, Ewing, Mutombo, Robsinson and Olajuwon were playing.

5.   MJ has 6 NBA Finals MVP awards

6.   MJ is 6 NBA Finals Appearances and NBA Rings.  He never lost in a NBA Finals series.

7.   MJ has 2 Olympic Gold Medals

I can go on and on and on but will conclude with defenses were stronger in the 1980s and 1990s......they could HAND CHECK......that got rid of that rule, and now folks and teams go to the free throw line if someone "touches them" hence the touch foul!     When MJ played the Pistons had something called the Jordan rules......"when he penetrates one player hits him low and another player hits him high ----- with the goal being put him on the ground!!!!!"   Kobe does not play with that kind of physical "D" on him....the closest we have seen is the Celtics and even they do not "touch him" or he goes to the free throw line ---- and look at how Kobe struggled against the C's.  The Knicks also played MJ very physically too.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion --- but when folks say Kobe is > MJ they are saying he is now the greatest athlete of all time........and that for me is hard to say and just is not logical when 5, 6 maybe 8 other athletes were deemed better than Kobe this past decade in other sports.........it just does not seem logical that the greatest athlete of the past 100 yrs has now been eclipsed by 10 guys.

If Kobe played in the era of real basketball where the Bad Boys beat you up or the Knicks punch you in the face then I'd recognize that situation

Let alone if half the players had fundamentals then I'd even consider this stupid example

Basketball now is much worse than it was then

Plus you don't think that MJ's superior jumper doesn't eat zones alive

B'c knowing that guys drive(you know the one that Kobe idolizies his game around) he'd kill the zone

1 v 1 is not a judge of best player of all time just because its a team sport (with help D).  If best player of all time was purely judged on 1 v 1 then I'd go with Allen Iverson.

It used to be understandable to choose the best basketball player of an era and call them the best of all time because the game of basketball evolved to have better players.  While players are certainly still getting better, you could still pick players from the 90's that would still be stars in this league.  In fact, some of these 90's players may still be the best at their position these days (especially considering how much the center position is lacking these days).

I wouldn't put Kobe ahead of Mike but Kobe's high up there in my mind.  And this is based off of skill and not rings.  Regardless of how many championships Lebron James wins I wouldn't ever put him that high up on the list of best of all time because I honestly don't think he has that much skill.  I look at it as if I were to teach a kid to play the game of basketball.  Would I show them Lebron James game?  Not at all unless I was talking about passing.

Also think about it this way...

I think Kobe is playing as well as Jordan was during his second 3 peat...

but in Jordan's first 3 peat he was the man, the franchise player, the offense ran through him and he played the best defender...  Kobe does this now but in his first 3 peat he was simply "a great role player"

like pippen to Jordan or like artest or ariza...  kobe made timely steals, rebounds, put backs, spurts of lock down defense, knock down open shots...but the offense was not run through him...

and "role player kobe" did this against single coverage, now he gets double teamed all game like Jordan was through out his career...

you have to give kobe credit for working at his game to go from Robin to Batman... Jordan how ever was always batman...

"Lebron is not even in the discussion. It will be almost impossible for him to ever catch up to these guys."

monumentally ignorant statement... Lebron is the same age right now as Jordan was when he won his 1st NBA title... he will this year get to handpick his team, and will end up beside the best point guard in the NBA... the coming 5 yeas in the NBA will be dominated by Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, who ARE the two best players in the NBA today (as was patently obvious when the 3 of them played together on the same Dream Team, and Kobe was the 3rd best of the 3)... Kobe being compared to Jordan makes him one of the most over-rated players to ever play this game...

when their careers are over, it is a virtual sure thing that Lebron and DWade will both be more highly regarded than Kobe Bryant, who was just GIVEN his last NBA title... (and GIVEN a title for the 2nd time in his career... 2002)...

get your head out of your ass!

6 of 24 in a game 7 is something you never would have seen from Jordan...

I know there alot of kope haters out there but i just like watching how good these superstars perform on a night to night bases...I think in there prime any great superstar in any sport is treat to watch...Don`t get my wrong in my mind air jordan will aways be the best but in every era the game will always be changing for the good of the game and the fan that pays the big bucks to watch these superstars.

The day Kobe is deemed > than MJ is the day folks start saying he is the best athlete of all time.

In 2000....MJ was voted as the best athlete ever....better than Babe Ruth....better than Ali.....better than Jack Nicholas.....etc..etc..etc...

MJ did not get that based on 6 rings and his shot making ability....but it appears that Kobe backers are looking at his shot making ability (during an era where you can not hand check) and his rings as if they are the determinants that made MJ the greatest ever.

In this thread, I posted some of the stuff that everyone dissected with MJ that made him superior (namely he was the BEST perimeter defender of all time too!!!!)

But I also remember the commercials......some folks may be to young.....but the commercial jingle....."Sometimes I dream, that he is me..........LIKE MIKE, IF I CAN BE LIKE MIKE"  .... commercial was huge.....and has lead to other athletes in other sports being compared to MJ......this guy is the MJ of this sport....or the MJ of that sport

I just do not see other athletes being regarded as the Kobe Bryant of their sport.

Call me crazy, but th back and forth with shaq I think tarnishes him a little too....and his coach writing a book calling him or referring to Kobe as "uncoachable" also doesn't help Kobe supporters case either......and those are things that just can not be rewritten in Kobe's legacy.

ct1016 says:
06/21/10 10:52AM

But MagicJordanKobe,

You make a lot of good points, but rings are a team accomplishment.....not an individual accomplishment.  And Kobe came into the league at age 18.....and will play more games and years in the league than MJ.

I remember someone saying that RIGHT NOW, everyone should be looking at Kobe's and MJ's numbers and rings becuase they have played practically the same number of games and have the same number of years in the league RIGHT NOW.

The fact that Kobe will play more years is great for Kobe.....but MJ took two years off to play MLB after his dad died...and that should not be forgotten.

MJ's body of work is more complete and diverse....I think Kobe backers are focusing exclusively on championships, Kobe's shot making ability and scoring.........which may get him close and in the debate.....but then MJ "skunks" him on regular season MVPs, regular season scoring titles, Steals titles (3), defensive player of year....Finals MVPs......etc.etc..etc....which Kobe backers say....ignore that....just look at the rings

Finally, I could be wrong....but if Kobe continues to take 24 shots to get 26 points......27 shots to get 33 points....etc..etc..etc...that too also puts him behind MJ......Kobe seems to be "forcing" these shots or ????  ????  it confuses me if they have the most skilled big in the game why he has to jack up so many shots.....sometimes at a nice percentage....but sometimes at a pretty bad percentage.   And when folks are considering you maybe to be the greatest ever...well those little things mean a lot if you will be deemed the greatest athlete of all time.

gd2436 says:

No he wouldn't b'c he isn't going to do that

But even if he did do you think he's going to be refered to as MJ was

Do you think other sports will say I'm the Kobe of this sport?

No b'c they'll still be talking about MJ like that and the funniest thing about this discussion

KOBE DOESN"T THINK HE"S BETTER AND WON"T EVEN TOUCH THE SUBJECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what do any of you think about that?

Here we go and I'll keep posting them he's been saying it for years and still holds on to that arguement

So once again what would you say that your "greatest" say's MJ is the greatest?????????????????????????

Oh yeah b'c many won't believe I'm starting a new thread

Do you think this new "no touch" era is better than the hardball era of the 80's and 90's?

Cause I think that was and will be the best basketball ever

I know the athletes are bigger stronger and faster but they don't have half the fundamentals that all the previous generations learned in College and this is killing the flow of the game as well as shooting. This style of basketball sucks IMO and is the reason I hate the NBA now as opposed to when I was a child and it was the only sport I loved

Can't believe anyone over 30 thinks this style of basketball is better than 15 years ago and the Lakers wouldn't have made it out of the West of 20 years ago when the players had heart and fundamental skills these players will always lack

mohjo says:

Kobe himself says it and you just ignore it

mohjo says:
06/21/10 12:37PM
Plus what the previous poster said about the teams Kobe faced being better than the teams MJ faced is not true IMO

That Blazers team would have beat all the teams Kobe did and the Suns team was great also

But I agree on the Lakers team being crap and Jordan having trouble w/ Magic's size

Of all the teams the Jazz were the strongest and he played them twice

Kobe's opponents

Sixers were a one man team and wouldn't have beat any of the teams MJ did not even those Lakers

Pistons were a great team and would have been good but IMO not enough scoring

The Celtics were good but this year they became an old group who IMO was unclutch and robbed at the foul line in the final game where Kobe shot like pure crap

Kobe Bryant hasn't performed in the Finals as a true great and his Finals record shows it

The only series he took over was the Sixers series where he played lights out in Philly and killed the Sixers

But in the Pistons series he was the reason they lost and then split the team

In the Boston series his team loses a 26 pt lead game  at home and ends up losing the series

Does anyone think the greatest in the game loses that game?

Even if MJ was playing 1 on 5 he would have found a way to win that game but Kobe let it go b'c he was incapable of doing anything

That game alone will make sure he is never considered b'c greats don't allow things like that to happen

Plus like I've been saying Kobe himself doesn't think it and neither does Magic and neither did Phil

Jordan vs Kobe:

Wow, this debate can go on forever, and it's hard to really make logical comparisons when so many people are kobe lovers and kobe haters. And it makes this topic worse when you're comparing kobe to the most respected, and one of the most achieved players in the history of the game.

Aside from Bill Russell, I don't think there's anyone that played and earned as many awards and won titles in such a long period of time. Magic and Larry Legend made their run, but commercially Jordan took this whole thing to the next level.

I think you guys forget that before Jordan there were all these other great players that NEVER had the same MARKETING TEAM. I believe aside from JORDAN's AMAZING TALENT, what's made Jordan even more amazing is the MARKETING AND ADVERTISING that he has received PAST and PRESENT.

Of course he deserved every bit of it and he definitely earned all the attention and accolades, but you guys have to REALIZE that Jordan didn't start winning until all the great teams of the 80's went downhill.

Yes, he had great games 40,50, 60 point games, but he didn't advance to the FINALS until 90-91 when the PISTONS were at the end of their Back to Back run, Boston was OLD AS DIRT with LARRY BIRD's back all screwed up, then JORDAN beat Magics Team that lost Byron Scott and James Worthy in the Finals, with NO PAT RILEY, No Kareem, Michael Cooper, with a rookie Vlade Divac, shooting big man Sam Perkins, Orlando Woolridge and a back up guard named Tony Smith?!!

Basically, the Lakers had a bunch of scrubs. They managed to win one game in that series. Again Lakers injuries made that outcome to look more lopsided. Magic was still at his peak at that time, but there was no way in hell he was gonna win that series with that team.

You should look at Magics stats in that series. He was still averaging 19+ pts, 12+ assists, 7+ rebounds. Jordan was being dominated by Magic. Only until Phil Jackson put Pippen on Magic and had him guard Magic full court was when that series completely turned around. But like I said, Magic still had a great series. he just had no help.

So Jordan won his 1st title against a Laker team that wasn't the Lakers of the 80's. But he did beat a Pistons team that was still very good. His next two came against Portland and Phoenix. Two very good teams, but neither teams could compare to any of the great teams of the 80's.

Then we go to his next 3 peat. He beat the Sonics, then twice the Jazz. The Sonics were good, but they weren't better than the Blazers or the Suns, and maybe not even that Laker team that Jordan first beat. The Jazz on the other hand were in my opinion the best team Jordan ever beat, because they had two great players that were still playing at their Peak...

Jordan vs Kobe:
 Continued:

I just don't believe the teams that Jordan beat were as GREAT as any of

the Teams that the LAKERS, SIXERS, CELTICS, PISTONS beat during their

run. Except for the JAZZ. To me, Jordan had it much easier than MAGIC,

BIRD, ISIAH, and DR. J. Of course you still have to go out there and

deal with what is dealt, which Jordan and the BULLS did magnificently.

It's just unfair to forget to mention the other greats of the past when

comparing Jordans Dominance and Kobe's Dominance. You should first ask

yourself which teams and players did these guys dominate during their

runs?

Again, even though Jordan had great games in the mid to late 80's, he

didn't win a title till all the Best Teams were done or they were only

a shadow of the franchise during their hey day.

I believe Jordan dominated a league that just didn't have other

dominant teams. So he stood alone. Sure there were great players in the

90's, but none of those great players he played against had a

supporting cast.

The Blazers had Clyde Drexler and Kevin Duckworth? (Rest in Peace). The

Suns had Barkeley and Kevin Johnson? KJ was good, but neither him or

Barkeley were winners. They weren't closers. And KJ was not the

superstar Sir charles was.

Then he beat Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. Very good players, but they

weren't closers. The Jazz had Stockton and Malone. These guys were

studs, but I think the mailman was a choker. They still gave the Bulls

the toughest challenge in my opinion.

So yes, Jordan won 6 out of 6 titles and 6 title Mvps, won a bunch of

regular season MVps, A Defensive Player of the Year or two, All Star

MVPs, and a partridge and a pair tree. Safe to say Kobe will never win

all those individual awards. The only thing he can catch and I believe

that the only one that matters is the rings.

So individually, without question Jordan is and always will be the Best

or most accomplished, but Kobe has the chance to get closer to Bill

Russell. You guys ever wonder if Kobe just didn't care enough to get

all the individual awards and just focus on the rings? Focus on the

Team and Franchise?

You guys ever wonder maybe Kobe didn't win more awards because the

voters just don't like him? I mean, how in the world does Steve Nash

have more MVPS than KOBE? Or How does Dirk Nowitzki win one over KOBE?

Or LEbron have one more than KOBE? Where have these players taken their

teams? What have these guys done to take their TEAMS to a place where

KOBE's been 7 times?

I truly believe Kobe is a victim of hate and denial. Some of the HATE

he deserves, because he was accused of Rape and he's very arrogant, but

the rest of it he doesn't deserve because PEOPLE or VOTERS aren't

willing to ACCEPT his GREATNESS. People and Voters can't or wont let go

of the PAST and CANNOT APPRECIATE what they are witnessing. Rather,

they'd be more in a hurry to crown LEBRON, NASH, D-WADE, DIRK, Kevin

Durant, D-Howard the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Only D-Wade I believe deserves recognition on that list above, because

when he had his chance, he CLOSED THE DEAL. The rest of these guys are

a joke, because they all choked when it mattered most. Yeah Kobe had a

Bad Game 7, but he did what he had to do to help the Lakers win.

Unlike the Teams that Lebron, Nash, Dirk, Dhoward have, Kobe has the

players that were able to close in case Kobe needed help. You guys

always mention Jordan, but Jordan had guys that helped him too. He had

BJ Armstrong, Craig Hodges, Steve Kerr, John Paxson, Toni Kukoc, Jud

Buechler, Horace Grant, and of course Pippen and Rodman, even Bill

Cartwright and Luc Longley and Cliff Levingston, Scott Williams, and I

can keep going to fill their respective roles. The bottom line is only

Jordan and Kobe have been able to close the deal.

Way better than LEBRON, DHOWARD, DIRK, or NASH ever could. KOBE is

light years ahead of these guys, yet they have more or have equal MVP

AWARDS. Do you guys honestly in your heart believe these guys are

better? So if we were to take away these MVPs from these imposters, how

many would KOBE have? Lebron has 2, Nash has 2, Dirk 1. So if KOBE had

all 5 which he deserves, because he's better than all 3, is he closer

to Jordan?

The Answer is maybe. But the BIGGEST REASON why KOBE will never be

JORDAN is because... Nike made Jordan a BRAND, and it has been

instilled in all of us, including young kids that AIR JORDANS are and

will always be the BEST SHOES and are the pinnacle of BASKETBALL GEAR.

So how in the world can KOBE top that? Even if Kobe went on an MVP and

TITLE rampage, it would still be almost impossible to top the JORDAN

BRAND. Especially because there are SO MANY KOBE HATERS.

People are so busy hating on KOBE, they overlook his talent and what

he's done for the LAKERS. Then there are the KOBE lovers who think KOBE

can do no wrong. So if there's anything that KOBE is, I believe he is

the most heavily criticized player in NBA HISTORY. One day hes the next

Jordan, the next day he's a hot dog that's just a copycat. Next day

he's a champion and MVP. Following day Lebron and Durant are better.

Another thing I believe is for sure. When Kobe is gone, all you guys

who are TRUE basketball heads will come to realize that KOBE if not

Better than Jordan was the closest that we will ever see a player that

was identical to the man we consider the greatest. Not only as a player

but what he brought to the team and what he did to his opponents.

So save the HATE and instead of Love, give KOBE some RESPECT. Because

KOBE works so hard to get to where he's at, and because he puts in all

the time in the gym, he's the only guy since Jordan, that is able to

close the deal more often than anyone else when it matters most.

Ask yourself would Jordan win as many titles and awards had he not been

all alone in the 90's. What if he played now? Ask yourself about all

the Kobe haters and if he had more writers who liked him, would he have

more MVPs. What if Shaq just swallowed his pride or stayed in better

shape would the Lakers have won more titles?

Ask yourself, should you hate Kobe for being accused of Rape or should

you hate the judicial system in which Kobe was able to get himself out

of his mess? Ask yourself why you hate or love kobe so much. And what

valid reasons do you have. Rather than just using assumptions. Use some

logic in comparing your hate or love for Kobe, and the comparison to

Jordan.

Again, individually there is no comparison to JORDAN, but at the end of

KOBEs tenure we might be able to determine who had a better overall

career. BUT... The same goes for all the players NOW. THERE IS NO

COMPARISON TO KOBE. Its KOBE and the rest. THE NBA IS KOBES LEAGUE. It

HAS been for the LAST FEW YEARS. NO matter what any of you HATERS say.

No matter who the MVP or any other award goes to. ONLY THE ONE TEAM

THAT IS LEFT STANDING AND WINS THE NBA TITLE MATTERS. And even when

PAUL PIERCE WON, he still wasn;t even close to KOBE, because when he

had his Chance to back up his BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD REMARK he

crumbled like a cookie. KOBE was the BEST PLAYER IN 6 of the 7 games of

the Finals. NUFF SAID.
