Wili Muschamp hired at Florida when will Foley learn

Jeremy Foley told me 10 years ago, in an EM,  when he hired Ron Zook, " He is a great recruiter " well that's what they are saying about Muschamp.

Urban Meyer spent 10 years as an assistant, then worked his way up with 2 years at bowling green, 2 years at Utah and then got the big job at Florida

Baseball hardly ever does this, you start out in the minors and work your way up

Ron Zook, Randy Shannon, Charley Weis, great assistant coaches that failed miserable as head coaches. Just because you are a good assistant doesn't mean you will be a good HEAD coach

As I said about Zook , "I hope I am wrong"

You don't give an assistant one of the top jobs in college football

Like to hear from some gator fans

Are you comparing Muschamp to zook?..... Really?

don't be ignorant. Will Muschamp is Nick Saban younger

JR all I am saying is that you never know what your getting with an assistant.... Zook, Shannon, Weis, McDaniels, etc

Anyone would be better than Zook, but Foley said he wanted a PROVEN winner, not another great recruiter

Be interesting who is OC and DC

Sounds like another RUSH job like with Zook

Muschamp literally has ties to make a staff that is just downright scary. This guy has been a part of big time football programs and won championships for a long time now. He had the number 7 defense in the country this year on a 5-7 team!  The guy is a scary hire for other teams, you will believe it very soon next year.

How can they be the #7 defense in the country giving up 23.7 a game?

The point you leep missing is, he has NEVER been a head coach

Look as a gator fan I hope he becomes a great coach, I just like them to work their way up like Meyer

Being a coordinator and being a HC are two very different animals.

WM has ZERO experience as a HC.  Zero.

Don't care how many great defenses he has put together.  Very shocked a top program like Florida would gamble with a HC with training wheels.

I almost wonder if this was Florida's 2nd or 3rd option on the wish list and wanted to make a move quickly before the recruiting class fell apart.

ATl you bring up some of the things I said and have been thinking

Foley said he was the only canidate and the only one he offered the job too. With all the great coaches out there this is a total shocker

This looks like another rush job, similar to ZOOK

Do you have any idea how fucking embarrassing Greg Davis was this year at Texas? If they had a bad defense they would have been giving up 49 a game at least with the positions that offense was putting them in.

Please stop comparing him to Zook, or anyone for that matter. Its beyond ridiculous

i'll say this... when names like Pederson, Patterson and Harbaugh are being thrown out there, and you end up getting Muschamp... that is definitely a consolation prize... Muschamp is a gamble!

i read your post after i made mine... agree 100%...

I'm a Gator fan.

Shocked about the hire but I actually like it. I understand he doesn't have any head coaching experience but look at the other candidates;

Patterson - Has TCU in the Big East where they can cake walk to a BCS bowl
Harbaugh - He just wants to go to the NFL
Peterson - Inherited a winner and is just maintaining
Mullen - Only 2 years on the job, bad recruiter but he was still my top choice
Strong - Only 1 year in, he was not ready yet

I think Muschamp is going to give us the physical defense Florida needs in order to compete with Alabama on a yearly basis. I will be interested in what type of offense Florida will be running though. Sometimes you have to take a chance on a guy and yes Zook blew up in his face but this could turn out to be a great hire and a long term option. Texas seemed to like him a ton since he was dubbed "coach in waiting"

And don't forget his ties to the state of Texas. Muschamp could very well have opened the state of Texas as another pipeline state for recruiting.

Apparently Major Applewhite will be the offensive coordinator. I thought I heard he was a great assistant but after seeing the results of his work, I am not so sure. Hopefully he turns out to be better then Addazio though.

As for defense, the rumor is that he is targeting Bama's d-coordinator, Kirby Smart who last year turned down an offer to become UGA's d-coordinator so I don't see him accepting UF's offer. However, I am not too worried about defense since Muschamp has proven he can take care of that side of the ball.

What the fuck is actually worse than Addazi?

This scenario sounds a hell of a lot like the way OU fans felt about Stoops as a DC coming in with no HC experience

IM FROM AUSTIN A GO TO ALL THE LONGHORN GAMES. THE PLAYERS LOVE HIM AND THE FLA. PLAYERS WILL TO WHEN THEY GET TO KNOW THIS GUY. I WOULD SAY FLA. IS DAMN LUCKY TO GET HIM.HE FITS RIGHT IN WIT THE SCC. YOU WILL SEE

Kansas your avatar fits in everywhere !

I'm not lucking for the Gator players to love him, just perform. They loved Zook

Some assistants make great coaches , like Stoops, all I. m saying is I prefer them to have proven themselves at a lower level first, like Peterson, Harbaogh , Patterson

An assistant with no head coaching experience is a GAMBLE

Let's hope it works out, I feel Foley rushed it like he did with Zook !

Objectively?

Does Muschamp have a better chance of being Meyer or Zook?

lsufasteddie says:

Thats what makes this a bad hire for UF. He better hire a damn good OC.

lsufasteddie says:

This will be his first grave mistake if true. I think he will bring appewhite in for his recruiting prowess, but OC would be crazy IMO.

The biggest thing when hiring an assistant coach to the HC position is where that assistant coach has been prior. Muschamp has been an assistant at Auburn, LSU, Texas and was an assistant HC and DC at Miami. In other words, he's been around and knows people. These are the type of guys you want as a HC because they are the ones who know the good hires around the country for his staff. Bob Stoops is an excellent example of it. He coached at Iowa, KSU and Floirda before taking the HC job. He immediatly knew who to call and bring in on his staff. And has since hired other great assistants that he's been familiar with from his previous jobs. Look for Muschamp to do the same thing at Florida. It's all about who you know in college football. Look for Muschamp to bring in an OC who prefers to run the pro set formation, since this is what Muschamp tried to get Mack to run at Texas for the last few years. But Greg Davis didn't want it. That's probably part of the reason Muschamp left. He didn't see Texas going anywhere with the way they were running things. And they were making Muschamp's defense look worse than it really was because of the sloppy and just plain bad offensive play. I think Muschamp will be fine at Florida as long as he can recruit. I know he's known as a great recruiter. But you have other teams in their state that are starting to emerge like FSU. And possibly Miami depending on who they hire as their next HC.
jordyn31 says:

Dr Strangelove you bring up some very good points, but for every Bob Stoops an assistant who made good at his first big job there are probably 10-15 times as many who fail

All I'm saying is I would feel a lot better if he coached and was successful at a MAC or sunbelt type of school

That said i hope he can bring in a top OC and DC

Weren't Joe Paterno, Barry Switzer and Tom Osbourne all hired without head coaching experience?
BigRedGambler says:

UMMMMMMM   Bo Pelini and Bob Stoops were both defensive assistants before landing bog time jobs. I think it worked out for them wouldn't you say???????????
BigRedGambler says:
12/12/10 11:02PM
Also just because your coming from a mid major team with head coaching experience doesn't always translate to success on the big stage. Dan Hawkins? Ty Willingham? Dennis Franchione?
jordyn31 says:
12/12/10 11:23PM

I mentioned Stoops, but also said for everyone making it , the majority don't

I just like them to work their way up , like in baseball.

Paterno was an assistant under Rip Engel for about 15 years, and it is a different game today

Look as a gator fan I hope Muschamp makes it, I just don't want another Zook
