Gentleman, my sincere apologies for the extended absence.  First and foremost, Happy frickin’ New Year!  Haven’t gotten a chance to wish you all well for the New Year.  I hope this is the most prosperous and profitable year for each of you.  New Years is actually what caused me to be away from Covers for so long, it was an unbelievable 2010 for me so I decided to take a beautiful lady friend for a short 3 day vacation.  It was kind of a spur of the moment, pack a toothbrush and jet kind of thing.  My first time actually travelling somewhere for non-work related activates.  Ended up spending 2 days in paradise when luck would find it that I came across a lucrative business opportunity.  Actually had to stop the vacation and take care of some things.  Suffice to say I doubt I will see that lady friend anytime soon J  But you guys know the saying, M.O.B.  This specific opportunity may cause me to take an extended trip overseas in mid-February but until then I am all yours gents!  Will be consistently posting my thoughts and picks for the next coming weeks, you can count on it fellas.

Please note, wherever I may be, the association always follows me thanks to technology.  I have actually had a very good week, if it wasn’t for my miss-read on the Denver Nuggets team I would actually have had the most profitable week of the season.  I backed Denver on both their west coast losses against the Clippers and Kings.  The sooner this trade happens the better as this projected 3 team trade could change the landscape of both conferences.  Lots to talk about over the coming week, looking forward to it.  Good to be back, best of luck guys.  Peace - - - MAK

 SACRAMENTO KINGS @ TORONTO RAPTORS

PICK: NO PLAY

I was actually leaning towards my boys prior to the news of Evans being out.  Although I have decided not to wager on my boys until Reggie Evans returns, I was tempted to do so in this spot.  The Kings are on Cali time.  They would have had to wake up at about 7am pacific time in order to get sufficient time in prior to tip-off.....did you all know that in Toronto prostitution is legal?  Some of the classiest entertainment, restaurants, night-clubs and bars dawn this great city and is a favourite among many NBA players.  Notoriously known for being a dangerous afternoon squad at home, the Raps have been mediocre on Sunday afternoons thus far.  I think that changes today, the Raps will be the alert and focused squad.  The only think that scares me is the size on Sac.  Cousins, Thompson, Landry and Sammy are a formidable four.  If Bargnani can frustrate Cousins and get him out of the paint, if Amir can stay out of foul trouble and use his agility to out-duel Thompson, if Ed Davis and Joey Dorsey can somehow negate the ability of Sammy and Landry on the glass, than the potent offense of the Raps should be able to take this inter-conference afternoon game.

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS @ LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

PICK: NO PLAY

Massive buzz-kill, two teams I am looking to back facing off

against each other.  Love What both these

teams are doing.  Golden State is still a

bit under the radar at the moment, backed them hard against Cleveland as one of

my larger plays this week.  The Warriors

are at full strength.  Biedrins is back,

Wright is healthy, Lee is good to go, Amundson is proper and for the first time

this season we have the full Warrior unit.

Cannot say enough about the growth of their youngsters.  Really want to write-up a lot about the way

Monta Ellis is playing as well as their young gem Ekpe Udoh.  I will show some restraint and save the

massive GS writeup for a day when I am backing them heavy, and I plan to back

this team hard over the next month when the proper situations arise.  Going against this Clippers team right now is

a very bad idea.  So what is the best duo

in the NBA statistically....must be Lebron and Wade right?  How about Tony and Manu?  No?  Gotta

be Monta and Curry....nope, how about Ray and Paul...wrong again.  The best duo in the NBA is Eric Gordan and

Must See BG.  Jordan is playing like he

deserves his last name, Baron Davis is happy, Ryan Gomes is a good wing

defender and the 4 man rotation off the Clippers bench is decent.  With all that being said they are still in a

very difficult Conference and have no chance at making the post season despite

what some people are saying, nevertheless this is no longer a “bad” team.  They have enough talent and enough of a

system to win some games this season.

Love both these teams to cover some spreads for us over the next coming

weeks, too bad they are playing each other.

No play gents.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES @ SAN ANTONIO SPURS

PICK: NO PLAY (CURRENTLY)

May decide to pull the trigger on “my” Tims.  Despite a horrendous loss to Charlotte which

I am still mentally recovering from, this team has made me more money than any

team this season.  They are my Raps of

2010/2011.  They have a heavy-handed

roster with a lot of talent at each position.

Wesley Johnson the talented young rookie will be demoted to the

bench.  Insert Corey Brewer: A massive

defensive talent who causes Manu more problems than anyone in the NBA.  If Beasley plays this game I may decide to go

for it.  Waiting for the line to budge a

bit more, I would love to get +13 on the Tims.

They played San An extremely tough in Texas a few weeks back.  Anthony Tolliver has returned from injury and

will impact the Tims positively tonight.

Despite their recent struggles I still consider the teams to be a decent

squad who can matchup at all 5 positions which is surprisingly a rarity in

today’s NBA.  Tims tenacity keeps os

respectable tonight.

CLEVLAND CAVALIERS @ PHOENIX SUNS

PICK: PHOENIX SUNS – 9.0 (-120) - - - 5 UNITS

Yes I do realize there is something wrong right now with the

Suns.  If you ask me and I answered...you

may think that Mak got hit in the head during his absence....the Suns are too

deep for Gentry to handle.  He has no

idea what to do, who to use, where to place them.  He is lost, but through it all he keeps a

level head and explains honestly to his team that there is something wrong, and

he and his coaching stall will collectively find out what it is and fix

it.  The answer to their problem is

simple....the Cavaliers.  Cavs are pound

for pound the worst team in the NBA right now.

Yes in my opinion, they have even less talent than the Kings at the

moment.  Mike Harris leading a team is

not right.  Sessions should start but

continues to come off the pine.  I really

like my African brother Eyenga on the Cavs, I see a lot of upside and

talent.  No Andy, No Boobie, No Defense,

No Confidence vs Hunger, Embarrassment, Pride & Focus.  Two-time and company will get back on track

tonight with a decisive double digit win.

5 UNITS STEVE “THE MENTALIST” NASH - - -

MIAMI HEAT @ PORTLAND TRAIL-BLAZERS

PICK: NO PLAY

I really think the Blazers have an excellent chance to stop

the Heat’s streak tonight.  Rose Garden

will be pumped.  Of course this automatically

turns into the most important game for the Blazers all season, while the

confident Heatles come in and treat this as just another game.  Big mistake with what could be one of the

most powerful starting front-lines in basketball.  Batum, Camby and Big L are massive.  Aldridge has been in “MVP” mode the last two

weeks.  Yes I said MVP, since Roy went

down and Nate talked to Big L, he has stepped up his game and is at another

level right now.  He and Chris Bosh are

long-time friends and will battle all night.

Wesley is actually a very good defender and will try to contend with

Wade....although I think Dwayne erupts after a mediocre game in Milwaukee.  What I have been playing a lot the last week

and a half are Lebron and Dwayne props.

Try and find the best pts+reb props and take them...they don’t

miss.  This team is a 3-man team and it

is working, there are not many stats to go around when 3 tremendous players are

on the floor for 38 minutes a game, tonight is not the night to start the props

with the abundant amount of rebounders on Portland, but look out for that in

the coming weeks.  Miami could easily

come out extremely focused after their scare in Wisconsin, but the Blazers may

surprise all and upset what will be the best team in the NBA at the end of the

season in terms of total wins and road wins.

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS @ DENVER NUGGETS

PICK: NO PLAY

As I stated above, would have been the best week of the

season for me in terms of profits if it wasn’t for the god damn Nuggets.  You can’t blame me really for backing them

can you?  Well ok you can.  I just thought with all of their immense

talent, on and off the bench, that this team could contend in the West.  What I failed to realize...is they do not want

to.  Mello wants out, Afflalo and J.R

want Mello out so they can shine, Billups knows he is going with so it doesn’t

matter to him.  They lacked heart....0

steals in a game?? 0 steals?? Not even a fucking deflection as I watched both

games.  Since 1976 the Nuggets have had

at least 1 steal in a game...this just shows that this team is done.  I will not back this team until they make the

move, it is also very difficult for me to go against them because of the roster

they have.  A roster, that if cohesive,

if happy, could have contended for a home court position in the post-season.

NEW YORK KNICKS @ LOS ANGELES LAKERS

PICK: NO PLAY

This may be a bailout play for me although I do not believe

in chasing.  If the Suns manage to lose

the cover I may decide to go with the Lakeshow.

The Lakers have been a team I have actually been able to call this

season which is surprising due to their fluctuating play.  I really think that it is only a matter of

time before Bynum gets acclimated into the starting 5.  Gasol move to the power spot and is averaging

a lot more assists.  That shows me the

triangle is modified to perfection as the position of Pau is the triangle is

different with Gasol at the 4.  With

Barnes being injured I see Artest stepping it up.  He was called out as was Kobe by Phil Jackson

and both will answer the Zen Master’s subtle shots.  Lamar Odom will also get about 4-5 minutes

extra a game with the Barnes injury and Luke may see some added time.  New York is balling, an exceptional team that

cannot be underestimated.  The loss of

Galo is not hurting them at all with Williams and Douglas stepping it up.  Wilson is in the top 3 most underrated players

in the NBA.  Amar’e is a leader and

Raymond is the definition of a New York City point guard, had the grit and

swagger.  No play for me, but a must

watch for sure.

I think they come out with the intensity needed to put this one away early.  Hope I am reading this team correctly.  They are better than they looked vs the Knicks and this line is about 2 points off.  Along with Minny this line has the best value of the day.  Good luck.

Good Luck Mak!

And Happy New Year to yourself!  I hope it will be one to remember!
By the way, I can't get a feel for this years Nuggets team myself and I've been following them since I was 8 years old!

I'd have to say off them right now until I can figure out what makes them so consistent/inconsistent and find out which nights they want to show up.  I can at least say they were due to hit a slump sometime soon.  A lot of weird chemistry with the players which I expected to breakdown after some point.  I don't think Kenyon Martin is going to work out this season at all.  After the repetitive injuries, there is no value in having him around, or even letting him take up a younger player's time and experience in the NBA to develop.  I think we will see a shakeup sooner rather than later (much like you saw with the Magic) if things continue to go south for them.   And JR Smith , I would love to know what makes this guy click or makes him stink up the team.  Almost any time he has a good game the team wins.  They gotta get Ty Lawson back to how he was playing a few weeks ago when Billups was injured.  But Lawson has always had a bum ankle which led to him to be a late 1st round pick instead of perhaps a lottery pick.  When Lawson is healthy he can keep up with many of the top guards in the league.  With his size and speed, he could actually be Denver's premier guard after Billups retires.  Who knows, he may even make a few All-star games in the future as long as he can stay healthy...

Like that Suns Pick with my man Steve Nash.
Just a quick thought: What do you think about Clippers 1st H? I know, you are mostly wagering whole games which is sensible. But i have seen so many games where the Clippers ruined their efforts of the first half in the third or fourth quarter. As a good rested squad right now, i could imagine a quick start by the clips. Though i have to admit you are absolutely right about this GS Team. I am expecting a lot of Amundsen!!
Glad to see you back here, Mak! Have a profitable and good 2011!

Don't get me started on the Nugs.  I just need them to revamp the team so I can begin backing them again.  They have all the intangibles to win they are just lacking the stability and are not coming correct.

Yeah I think Minny is where the value lies in that game, Mak. I thought we'd be looking at SAS -9 so I think we're getting almost a full possession in our favor here. I remember talking to you about the Timberpuppies before the season, I think we were both on point about them from the very beginning. They are starting to round into form and will not be an easy out as the season goes along, and whenever they are getting DD points you have to at least give them a look. How much fun is this team gonna be to watch next year Mak (assuming we get NBA ball next year and there is no lockout) if Rubio comes over? Rubio, Love, and Beasley? That will be AWESOME and I will enjoy watching that squad immensely. They've stockpiled a ton of young talent and despite their progress this year, they are sure to get another lottery pick next year.

makaveli23 says:

You know what buddy, you are not crazy for thinking about a potential upset.  Tims are more than capable of pulling off a shocker tonight.  The fact remains that betting against the best team in the NBA at home is just not something I would feel comfortable in doing.  It depends on what your bankroll looks like comparative to the start of the season, if individuals can afford gambles then this is a good one to take, if money management and progressive profit is key then the best course of measure is to pass and not throw a fit if Minny wins straight up.  Easier said then done.  I wish you the best of luck my friend.

PLEASE DON'T!!

I might be a busy man but I still am up with the "go-on-ins" of the Covers universe...you my friend....are a douche bag.  How are you going to rip on cappers after tailing them?  I completely understand your frustration with not trusting your gut and going with your plays but that is your own fucking fault...no one else.  I really do despise individuals like you on Covers.

I have been very lucky to not come across any "haters" this season on the NBA forum.  I try to personify class and humility when I post so I hope that is the reason.  But as I become more consistent over the next few weeks and decide to take some calculated risks I am sure I am going to have ungrateful swines like yourself come in and bash me after a few losses.

Don't you realize this is about progressive profit?  You bash on Sharpstick.  A guy who admittedly states he knows nothing about basketball.  He decides to share plays that have been consistent for him over the years. Weather it is from a syndicate, sharps, himself, what the fuck does it matter.  He is consistent and kind enough to provide it for all of you who blindly tail. The "got the call" has been very popular over the last 3 years on Covers.  I have seen different posters come and go with a lot of popularity.  Despite the constant barrage of bullshit Sharp gets he still posts his plays, what right do you have to bash him or any other capper if they sway you the wrong way.

Here is an idea dog, cap your own games.  I have never...and will never, tail anyone else in NBA basketball.  Even if there was a tout who was 30-3 on the season, I trust my knowledge in the game over anyone, anywhere, anytime.  You need to build that confidence within you and not whine about a lost tail.  You have been nothing but respectful to me in your time here, but I can't help but feel I could be next on your hit list, it is uncalled for.

Be a man....dooo the right thing.

FINAL CARD:

PHOENIX SUNS - 9.0 (-120) - - - After starting the year 4-3, I really thought this team had a good enough roster to contend for 7th or 8th in a dismal eastern conference. Incorrect.  They are awful.  I honestly think a D League team may have an opportunity to beat tonight roster subtract Antawn.  It is unacceptable for this roster to be this bad.  After all the GM said in the off-season, he should have done something else.  This teams needs a massive makeover and they are already in rebuilding mode.  That combo is disastrous. Since their 4-3 start the Cavs have gone 4-25.  1-8 ATS in their last 9 -4-15-1 in their last 20....just spectacularly awful. This line is just off due to the Suns dismal performance vs New York.  The Suns did however play the Lakers very well and I was impressed with a few things.  I now doubt the Suns can make the playoffs in the East.  Portland and Memphis are just better teams in my opinion and I don't think they can stay alive in a dangerous conference.  Even if the Cavaliers cover the spread, I just do not see an opportunity arising anytime in the near future that I would actually back the Cavs.  They may be the first ever team I have added to the blacklist due to default.  Sad....this team had hopes to win the title last year.  Now they are on Mak's blacklist :(  Sorry Ohio, the Cavs are dead.

Starting Lineup For The Next 10 Suns Games: Nash, Carter, Hill, Frye, Lopez

Stability is key for the Suns and this a step in the right direction,  Gentry had the same idea I had.  Set a strict rotation.  Look for Dud to get burn off the bench along with Gortat and Dragic leaving Pietrus who has not fit in well out.  He is a very good defender and may still get some run.  I think this is the right thing to do but the wrong starting 5.  Still the Suns can win this game with ease, but their future is in jeopardy as is this season and Nash as a Sun.

6 UNITS STEVE "THE MENTALIST" NASH - - -

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES +13 (-120) - - - I just really like Brewer as a starter.  He averages 14 pts a game as a starter, he is amongst league leaders in steals and his man to man on the ball defense is top 10 in the NBA.  He gets about 3 deflections a games and takes about 1-2 charges a game.  That is a potential 5 extra positions which will come in handy in tonight's cover.  Luke plays Tony well.  Luke cannot be underestimated, number 2 in the NBA at FT% and 21st in 3pt%.  Love can dominate any player on the boards even the greatest power forward to play the game.  I no longer doubt what love can do.  He can also fill it up, a 43 point game in Denver proved it.  Darko has really slowed down a bit so it is a concern as he was an important part to Minny's success.  He is however averaging 70% from the field and is the 5th best block artist in the NBA.  The bench of Minny maybe injected with some desire from Wesley who will come off the bench for the first time since early in the season.  Webster, Tolliver, Flynn, Pekovic and Kofus will all get time tonight.  I really do not think Minny will win this game, they may not even come close.  But keeping it respectable is something they should do after some tough losses.  Love Kurt Rambis and how he guides the youngest team in the NBA.  Hopefully Minny shows their talent tonight.

2 UNITS JOHNNY "OVERTIME" FLYNN - - -

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS + 6.0 - - - I absolutely HATE betting against the Heat.  As stated I am calling for them to be the best team in the NBA come the end of the regular season.  They will reach the conference finals and are the only real threat to Boston's championship in my opinion.  I called this at the beginning of the season and it is even more evident now.  I am very bias toward Aldridge.  I think he has the capability of being as dominant as Dwight Howard.  He had the body, the low post skill, the strength and the mental aptitude.  He has notoriously disappeared at times in his career but with no Roy it is not his team.  He is the leader on offense and alongside a vet like Camby, they just compliment each other.  Camby is an absolute monster, has been for years.  Silent but deadly, amongst league leaders in rebounds and blocks every single year.  Miller, Wesley and Batum are all decent defenders.  Patty Mills has turned into an NBA rotation player and a much needed backup on this Blazers team.  Look for Rudy to get a few triples and Joel to provide a spark off the bench.  He is back from injury and and some size off the bench.  I really see a low scoring grind it out defensive games that the home team may just win.

I think this NBDL team from Cleveland is lulling the Los Suns to sleep

Wake up Nash & Co.!!!

MAK, TOTALLY AGREE...GIVE IT TO MCALPINE.  IF YOU TAIL SOMEONE BLINDLY, THAT'S YOUR OWN FAULT AND DON'T BE BITCHING ABOUT IT.

Of course right after I say that and they lose to the Hornets at home last night the talks for dealing Melo heat up

My opinion, they NEED a trade right now.  Melo won't bring them to the Finals, and certainly not with another team with the way he's been playing lately.  As long as Denver keeps Billups, Lawson, JR Smith and Nene, they are still a 7 or 8 spot in the West.

The Nuggets GM knows that Melo signing the extension won't happen in Denver.  Why wait until the summer when they get nothing in return?  It would be a smart decision to trade him before the deadline so the Nuggets can at least get something instead of nothing.  Even if it is a few young Nets players (Favors would be awesome!) and some draft picks.  Favors would have an immediate impact on the Nuggets as they need more of a post presence in their game to compete with some of the more elite forwards in the league.  Not saying Favors would be able to defend some of the top forwards at this moment right off a trade, but give him a year or two.  I think he will be a stud in the NBA.  Favors is very young but has the potential to be something big.
