Wright - Williams: Vegas in the spring time

This looks like it might have all the makings of a classic matchup with lots of interesting variables. The Punisher is an up and comer for certain, and Winky, of course, is more than comfortable in the role of the well traveled veteran. With Williams "Biggest" win somewhat tainted by the recent happenings in the Margrito camp and the long layoff for The Winkster who knows what could unfold come this spring in Vegas. Can Paul continue his rise up the ladder, or will the crafty Winky be able to turn back both father time and the rapid fire delivery of the Punisher, will youth be served or will the old gray beard dig deep one more time. With the gorgeous Mandalay Bay playing host (and fond memories of the world class seafood buffet still fresh in my mind) I cant think of a better reason, or season to be headed west for fight night.

I'm a big Paul Williams fan, but I just can't get excited about any Winky Wright fight.  If the inactive, old Winky beats Williams, it's a bad night for boxing.

hey good point DannaDanger,,with that said would you give Winky a chance to pull out the upset win ?

Probably not.  Winky likes to put those earmuffs on and wait for opportunities to throw punches.  I don't know if he'll get that chance against Williams.  He doesn't stop punching.  He'll just keep touching Wright all night, whether it's to the arms, elbows, body, ears, gloves.  He just won't stop.

Winky will be ready, he's got a chance. He's a smart fighter, he knows what Williams wants to do.

Winky isn't aggressive enough to win rounds vs Williams. He'll probably lose a decision and bitch about the judges. Williams via UD seems about right.

I feel that Winky knows how to be just aggressive enough. I watched him fight Sam Soliman at Mohegan back in December 2005. Because of Soliman's style Wright was more active than normal. He wasn't content let Soliman set the pace win over the judges.

Paul Williams > Sam Soliman X 2

Also, how rusty will Winky be?  Maybe he should take a tune-up first, before jumping in with one of the top 15 p4p guys in the sport.

I agree with you completely DD. I was not comparing Williams and Soliman and I would have legitimate concerns about Wright being rusty coming off a 21+ month layoff.

Paul Williams is a amatuer style fighter with no head movement, no latteral movement, lacks power or a killer instinct. Williams is a good prospect but over rated.  Wright will try to stay inside behind the right jab Wright  a much crisper puncher and has fought way quicker and explosive fighters than Wiliams  (jermain taylor and shane mosley). with that said I like winky as an underdog, but if he's in the shape he was last fight williams will win a 12 round UD.

This fight shouldn't be made. Paul Williams has NOTHING to gain by beating Winky! This is not a fight for fans, media or anyone else but their own pockets! I cannot see how anyone can say this is a classic matchup. Winky is purely defensive and have never seen anyone look impressive beating him, or any of his fights exciting. Calling a Winky Wright fight a classic matchup is like saying watching your grandmother knit is FUN!

Look at Winky's resume! That's right.

Yes he beat Mosley TWICE, everyone knew he was TOO BIG for Mosley, he beat Mosley easily the first time, then had a rematch... hmmm makes no sense. Rematches are for close decisions or for wars that the public wants to see.

He fights Trinidad who pretty much came out of retirement, if you consider punching Mayorga like a sparring partner a fight, he came to cash in one last time.

Bronco Mckart, who he beat EASILY, yet a few years later fights him again?

He lost to VARGAS, (which I believe he won) Vargas was raw and put in way too soon with great competition. Where was the rematch?

Ike Quartey we know is a sell out, fights once a year and goes back to Ghana, his last real effort was against Oscar, after that it was just to cash in.

He did beat Jermaine, but I believe that was a draw, and not a really good fight to watch.

He MOVED UP 10 pounds and came in with titties! He looked flat out horrible! Hopkins showed exactly what Winky was doing (beating fighters in lower weight classes) Mosley moved up Vargas Moved up, Trinidad moved up.

Williams is being primed to make money for everyone around him. With Margarito gone there is one less fighter out there to be a chioce for anyone looking to get paid.
