Open Letter to my Canadian Neighbors…

To My Neighbors to the North

I am an avid hockey fan and my team is The Ducks of Anaheim. That being said, I was excited for these Olympic Games as my team had more representatives going to the games than any other NHL team. Pretty cool. And the games definitely didn’t disappoint! What a great tournament! Granted, as a citizen of the United States and as someone who has always wanted more respect for U.S. Hockey, I was rooting for Team USA. That being said, I wanted to tip my hat to the Canadian Team and congratulate your country on your achievement of the Gold Medal! Well done!

I have been lucky enough to have visited Canada on three different occasions in my life ad it is a beautiful country with a lot to offer. Of all of those offerings, however, I have to admit that Hockey is my favorite! It is my hope that, due to the Silver accomplishment of the US team, more Americans recognize the greatest sport on the planet and start supporting Hockey even more.

I am a season ticket holder for my Ducks and I recall the 2007 playoffs when we were up against the Calgary Flames. My son and I were at the game and three rows from the ice and a group of about 10 – 12 spectators who were sitting in the row behind us had traveled from Canada to root for their Flames. Well, we beat Kiper in that one and they couldn’t have been cooler about it. EACH ONE of them shook our hands and congratulated us and I will never forget that class. Here they were, diehard fans like me (and even more so since they traveled to see their team) yet they were cool enough to respect that they were in the Duck’s house and humbly accepted that defeat. This experience was consistent with my other experience with the people of Canada.

So, again, I congratulate the fans of Canadian Hockey.

And, I celebrate the Silver Medal that our boys brought home.

All in all, it was some damn good Hockey!!!!

Now… let’s drop the puck and continue the NHL season and the playoff run.

GO DUCKS!!!

Para....Well written Bro!

Congrats to both Canada & the U.S of A, in performing what was one of the best Olympic Hockey events in its history.

The Gold couldn't have gone to a country more deserving than Canada.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances that preceded the Olympics, I feel that Vancouver deserves some props as well, as they certainly help keep the Olympic spirit alive & were worthy hosts, with out a doubt for the 2010 Winter Olymipcs..,,

classy!

take this along to a greater audience than here - send as "letter to the editor" of your local paper, to espn, etc.

hockey is a great sport - full of drama, speed, excitement, etc. we need the U.S. public to come on board. we need sports commentators and sports radio hosts to speak well of this sport and not speak out of ignorance or disparagingly, we need sport departments to spend more of their budget to promote it . . .

well, you get the idea.

Goyya tip my hat to the Canadians as well. Crosby scoring the game winner was a fitting passing of the torch to the next generation of great players. How about Johnny Toews though huh??? If Crosby comparable to Gretzky I see shades of Messier with Toews. Impressive. Sick and tired of hearing of hearing on tv how Americans dont love hockey and prefer hillbillies making endless left turns with stock cars lol. Im from Chicago and fell in love with the game in the 70's with Tony Esposito and practically grew up in the old Chicago Stadium watching the Hawks and all those wonderful rivalries with Edmonton and Minnesota and St Louis. Greatest sport there is!! No shame in losing to Canada. To beat them once on their own ice was quite an accomplishment for hockey in this country. To do so twice was too much to ask for. Kudos to the Canadian team for handling the pressure that undoubtedly would have gotten to a team of lesser character. Ok back to the grind LET'S GO HAWKS!!! LOL

Thank you to you all for the kind words, all... I am just speaking from the gut. When you see the beauty and brilliance of a game like hockey, but live in an area where so few people follow the game, it makes you feel like you are speaking a secret code when you meet someone who IS actually into the game. I work with a couple of Red Wing fans and every time we see each other, we talk puck. Funny, since we should hate each others' team, but there is a mutual respect.

I noticed one comment in this thread making fun of the fact that I called Hockey the best game on the planet. I will stick by that. Argue all you want OneManDynasty, but your username indicates that you are more a fan of individual sports than team sports, right? Well then Hockey won't make much sense to you, I guess. But that's, OK. I mean, granted, I understand that it is just an opinion, but it is the attitude that it somehow laughable for someone to claim Hockey as the best sport that really gets to me. I realize the talent that it takes to play sports such as Basketball and I even played Basketball in High School, but now when I try to watch it, and they are calling fouls for barely tapping another player and players are sitting out because of a hangnail, I just long for the caliber of game where Selanne got literally stitched up (6 stitches) on the bench during a playoff game and only missed 2 shifts before he was back out there. Does that mean I make fun of basketball? Nope. Or laugh at you if it is, in your opinion, the best game on the planet? Nope. I just happen to appreciate hockey a bit more. (Oh, and by the way, I love Baseball, Soccer, Billiards, Poker and Curling too... is that OK with you?)

Oh and TdotCapper... you say that my Ducks won't make the playoffs? You may be right, especially since the strange subtle moves that they have made latley are questionable, but you have to admit that they are climbing back into contention, right? We'll see... either way, I will be watching.... I think that they have a chance, but I admit that I am a fan and probably a bit biased.

Thanks again my fellow puck fans... for your support.

Growing up in Northern Ontario, I played allot of hockey in Michigan. The caliber of hockey down there is very good and U.S.A will be a good team for years to come. I look forward to a date with the States more than with Russia now. That says something...
