No NFC 6th Seed has ever made it to the Super Bowl.  Only one has ever made it to the NFC Championship.

No AFC 5th Seed has ever won the Super Bowl.  Only one 5th Seed has made it to the Super Bowl & that was New England in the 1985-86 season.  Only four 5th seeds have even made it to the AFC Championship.

The 6th seed has been around since 1990, the 5th seed has been around since 1978.

The Giants were a wild card team (5th seed NFC) and won the SB in 2008. Two years prior the Steelers were the 6th seed and won the SB (06). That being said any wild card team can go on to win the big dance. THis agrees with your last statement that parity in the NFL is the only thing you can count on. Just because the NFC 6th seed and the AFC 5th seed has not won the big game is a moot point. Time will fix this.
