i was having a discussion with a buddy about how gsp has basically cleaned out the division.....  i suggested give anthony johnson a shot....... hes powerful quick and athletic enough to match up........ i just think he would get taken down like everyone else has..............  who do you all want to see him fight?

Diego Sanchez or Kenny Florian... Only two guys I see that are acutal welterweights disguised as lightweights that can pose interesting problems for GSP. Everybody in the Welter division worthy of the title shot has already attempted and failed.

I dont think those guys would pose much of a problem, and that is why Diego moved down divisions, they are too small....Look at BJ, great great fighter but just too damn small and got bullied around, he has fought at heavier weights before too, and he is a big favorite over Florian so how could Florian really have much of a chance vs GSP.. GSP bullies around big welterweights like Fitch and Thiago, imagine what he would do against small welterweights (ie Florian or Diego if they were in that division)...

I disagree with all of that. Diego Sanchez isn't a small welter for the record, and the reason he dropped down to lightweight is so that the UFC can market him better so he can put a title run in light and slingshot to a GSP title shot. Diego Sanchez has only lost twice, only to decisions to Koscheck and Fitch and one of those fights Diego had a staff infection.

The fact that B.J couldn't do it against GSP at welter and that he's a favorite over Florian has nothing to do with Florian's chances to defeat GSP. Styles make fights anyways, everybody knows that. Oh, and if we used the thought process of if this guy couldn't do then he can't do it, this guy lost the first fight so I guess he'll never be able to beat this guy again, then nobody in MMA would have a winning record.

B.J Penn just proved that he can't beat a world class GSP at 170, that's all. He just isn't built that way, Diego is a natural Welter who is arguably top 3 Welter in the world, and now running through lightweight.

Styles really make fights, there are fighters that are just built to give guys dangerous problems rather their great or average themselves. I really believe Diego could pull it off against GSP or come really close doing it. Florian, I think, would make it exciting and probably lose but like I said before. "would pose interesting problems for GSP".

Just my opinion......

Just my opinion though......

Touche, Diego did have a rough second and third with Guida. Everybody who has ever beaten Guida did it by a cunt hair. My opinion was  based on styles and not past performances of every fighter he's ever faught. Good point though.

To think that Florian even has a chance against GSP is ridiculous.  And Diego was a very small welterweight, he said he used to cut down very easily from like 176 or something most times. Im not even saying it, watch a couple videos where he was explaining why he went down to lightweight, cause he said he was a very small welterweight, Rogan said it himself, they all agreed lightweight is his best division cause he is a big lightweight.

Diego was a very good welter but he knew against the very top guys (fitch, GSP, alves) he was undermatched mostly physically, he is not a top 3 welter in the world, no way. Look at his last couple fights at welter, he lost unanimous decision to Koscheck and then lost a decision to Fitch.  Fitch was the nail in the coffin, he was just too big for Diego.   I agree with you GSP ran through everyone in the welterweight, but  If u still think Diego or Florian are the two guys that have thebest chance against GSP, you are dead wrong.  Those two guys are in the lightweight divi for a reason.....

No disrespect by the way... Always good to have discussions and our own thoughts, and so on... improves the forum and hopefully it will help us make more money in the long run.

I'm with JOKER.

Anderson Silva vs. GSP at catch weight would be INCREDIBLE.... Anyone else agree?

cheers

Money shot,
I love your post... however, do you really think Kenny florian wouldn't have a shot against GSP? Florian has proved he is a talented fighter and I would def give him a solid shot at GSP, even though I still see st. pierre tko'ing him

And i do think that BJ if he stayed in welterweight, would be at least in the top 4 welterweights definitely ahead of Diego.  BJ lost badly to GSP but everyone  has been getting killed by GSP.   Florian and Diego are two of my favorite fighters by the way. Florian is such a class act, and he gets max out of his fighting ability. Im  really hoping Florian can somehow pull out a big win vs BJ, wont be easy though lol.   Ill bet a bit on Florian at +200 odds hoping BJ somehow gasses.  Im not confident in him winning though, BJ is one tough SOB especially at lightweight.  Florian will have to cut him up.

I do. Everyone has a very small shot at beating anyone, etc Matt Serra... but very very small shot.   GSP is just very intimidating especially if he is the bigger fighter which is almost always is. He is so damn strong, fast, especially with those takedowns.  Florian would get overwhelmed.

GSP has proven he is a top 3 candidate p4p. He has dominated everyone in the divy.  Hard to think a natural lightweight can beat him.    The guy that can beat GSP will be a bigger fighter. Someone stronger... Its got to be a very big welter or a true middleweight...

It's GSP's ability to take guys down so easily that makes him so dominant. If GSP didn't have that I would have a hard time thinking he would not be 19-2 and actually be considered human. He is a very good striker but the fact that he can easily take down anyone and stay on top of them and pound his was to a victory is what makes him so special. My first thought was anyone with a sick guard would be able to handle GSP but that proved me wrong when he rolled through Penn in their rematch. I honestly think GSP could beat Anderson Silva. I can't see the Spider stopping any takedown and GSP would control the ground game and ultimately ride out a decision or get a late TKO.

I want to see GSP move up a weight division. He is already a monster at WW and I think we all agree if BJ cant hang then noone else in the LW division can. Him fighting at 185 would be sweet. Match him up with Maia/Marquardt winner and then if he wins he could go one to fight Silva.
