Treatment of NBA Coaches

With the news of Mo Cheeks being the latest head coach being sacked it represents the most number of head coaches sacked before Christmas in ANY season played in the history of the NBA.

It's an absolute joke that we are only 25 or so games into the season and that there has been so many who have been given the flick. The NBA players get it way too easy and take no responsibility for their own poor performances. Instead of front office taking the easy way out and blaming the coach for their own team's poor start to the season how about they grow some balls and start calling out some of their own players who don't perform on a nightly basis.

Pathetic,

Indeed, they got no respect for them. Just look at Utah. The management doesn't meddle with anything that Jerry Sloan does. He (the coach) virtually runs the team which it should be in basketball. What I see happening is that coaches have been the scapegoat of the organization. It's like the coaches are adjusting themselves to their so called "star players" which should be the other way around.

Basketball has been a team sport for as long as I can remember.

perfectly agree with you on this one, players win games, coaches are to be blamed for losses really wrong...

I've been thinking of this too.. i just thought that maybe the teams cannot fire/release the players since they are in contract and even if they'd release the players they'd still be paying them(look they can't even fire starbury). So the only way NBA team heads can do it is by firing the next thing in line, the coaches.

There's no place for ethics and morals in modern day professional sports when it comes to players and or coaches not getting results and how they are treated.

totally agree. its very unfortunate. Mitchell was NBA Coach of The Year 2 years ago and now hes unemployed.   Mo Cheeks shouldn't have been held responsible for the 76ers slow start. Elton Brand looks like he's lost a step, and Andre Miller has played pretty bad as well so far this season.

Its like that in every sport....not just in basketball

Look at European football.

Its a shame.

It's not even only in sports that it happens. When an Eddie Murphy movie (Meet Dave) or Mike Myers movie flops, it's either the director or marketing team that screwed up.  Establishments can't or won't blame their stars for fear of antagonizing them. Star players draw in ticket sales, while a coach is just another staffer.  Witness how the Houston Rockets are profitable despite T-Mac's inability to carry his team every year past the first round of the playoffs. Ditto Dirk No-wins-ki in DAL and Marbury in past years as a Knick.

I would love to see NBA contracts be written with a performance clause in them: no performance; no money. Of course, the players' association would have a fit.

it's still too early in the season to judge these coaches. since when did the nba turn into the nfl?

I agree Rod....These days the automatic move by front office people is to fire the head coach.  There is no more let's wait it out or give them til the end of the season or all star break kind of attitude.  It's madness out there.  These are pro players and should be held responsible for their lack of production.

I know it's just this came to a head with the NBA because of the large number of coaches who have already been sacked before the team has played 25 games!!! How on earth do you make an assessment after 25 games???
