Rod's 2009 French Open

I don't claim to be an expert on tennis. However the French Open is my favorite tennis tournament every year so will follow it closely.

Going through the futures markets now, hunting for the best price on Rafa which will be the few ocassions I will bet that much chalk. Not going to bet on qualifying though.

From a womens perspective I think it will be a Russian dominated event. Safina and Kuznetsova come into this tournament as the form players on the surface, do believe this is little Safin's year. Wozniacki is a bit of a sleeper even though highly seeded, her movement on the surface is exceptional which will ensure she will be competitive against the big guns but not sure she has the firepower to beat the likes of Safina, Kuznetsova, Jankovic in the business end of the tournament.

So Federer is drawn in Djokovic's half which IMO clears the way for Rafa to be untouched until the final, and more importantly not exhaust himself which was the issue in Madrid.

Mama: Please read my post next time, in total I have $250 to win $75 on Rafa, which I know isn't value or a good line but it was what was available to me with my bodog balance and my local. I am now looking for what I should do? Im contemplating taking Roger at +500 for $100 or Nole for +750 for $100 with my local because no money will come out of my pocket until after the French is done! I want to take Nole and hope he makes the Semis v. Roger and hedge, Nole just really scares me because he has all the talent and seems to thrive on clay its just the hearts not there!
rod_steel says:

Don't hedge Curtis
CurtisSumpter says:
05/22/09 11:09PM
Rod: You know your my boy and I love your insight, but I dont seem that anyone is getting my question. I don't want to hedge on Rafa. I want to place a future on Roger (+500) or Djoker (+750) with my local, was leaning Djoker hoping that they meet in the semis and I get a line which is just a little north of -110 by that I mean like -130 to -175 range on Roger and bet on Fed for like 300 and hope that he beats Djoker and meets Rafa again in the finals. I think it is highly likely that this scenario occurs and I wanted thoughts and opinions before I pull the trigger. Basically I am trying to almost guarantee ( I know in gambling nothings guaranteed) profit!

Curtis I have re-read your post a several times and still don't understand what you are attempting to do.

Tell me if this is right:

So at the moment your position stands at

$100 on Rafa to win $25

But you want to bet $100 on either Federer or Djokovic? Ok for arguments sake let's say you lay the bill on Djokovic @ +750

So now on top of $100 you have on Rafa you have:

$100 on Djokovic to win $750

So now if both Djokovic and Federer meet in the semi-final, again let's say for arguments sake it's a straight pk'em. Are you saying you want to lay $300 on Federer at -110? Again let's say like you say Federer beats Djokovic and meets Rafa in the final.

Your position come final time is:

-$100 on Djokovic

+$270 on Federer you won on him in the SF

Meaning overall you are up $170 with another $100 pending on Rafa to win $25?

rod_steel says:
05/23/09 02:18AM
If the above is what you are trying to say there is one major flaw with that strategy and one that is definitely not the risk. If you lay the $300 on Federer and he loses, which means you have a liability of $300 into the final and the only way you will be in the positive is if Djokovic beats Rafa in the final in order for you to cash the +750 futures ticket you had with him from the start.

I will say it now, there is no way in hell that Djokovic can beat Rafa over a best of 5 set match in Roland Garros this year. Happy for anyone to quote me on this if this happens this year.

CurtisSumpter says:
05/23/09 03:14AM
Rod: your previous post is about right I want to either bet Federer at +500 and just let it ride and hope he reaches the final v. Rafa where I unload on Rafa after rolling bets on Rafa and Rog thru the tourney, or bet Nole at +750 and believe that him and Rog meet in the semis and bet about half my position because I feel Rog will roll him and I like the extra +250 for hedging purposes!

All bets between 1-5 throughout the fortnight

Nadal to win French Open - (-220) (5)

I get a better price as a result of Rafa's loss to Federer in Madrid last week but that was off a 4 hour match against Nole in the semi-final. Basically it was 2007 Hamburg repeated where Rafa was rolled by Federer in the final by virtue of Nadal being fatigued.

rod_steel says:
05/24/09 12:17AM
Safina to win French Open - (+310) (3)

Kuznetsova to win French Open - (+840) (1)

Simple case of backing the form horses on the womens side based on the European clay court swing just completed over the past month. Dinara lost in the final against Kuznetsova in Stuttgart and then proceeded to win both premiers events in Rome (d Kuznetova) and Madrid (d Wozniacki). Although not having won a slam before she has had the experience of going deep in Paris having made the final last year after an incredible run where she came back from the dead in a couple of matches against Sharapova and Dementieva.

I also like Wozniacki purely based on value so may add her later in the tournament depending on how she plays in the first week as I am still not sold on her GS pedigree at this stage of her young career.

CurtisSumpter says:
05/24/09 01:31AM
Going very small here, I got the following pending with the Magic futures you placed for $100 on Orlando to win the ECC at +700 and $50 on them to win the chip at +1400.

Nadal via Blowdog - $150 to win $55

Nadal via Local - $100 to win $25

Dinara via Local - $50 to win $125

Kuznetsova - $25 to win $162.5

Federer - $25 to win $125

Djokovic - $25 to win $187.5

Im going small hoping to roll some bets and get some good spots and pick up a quarter or a little more here and there and try and net around $300 - $400 profit at the end of this tourney! Heres to a good one Roddy!

CurtisSumpter says:
05/24/09 02:37AM
Your a moron with your 1 post. The idiocy on the site continues to amaze me, I bet Nole and Fed hoping they meet in the semis and I will bet on who I feel is in better shape. Let me explain what I'm intending to do since your an idiot. Hypothetically Nole and Fed meet and lets say I get -110 on Federer I bet $110 to win $100 on Federer and if Federer so happens to lose theres still a possibility that I win $87 if Nole beats Rafa which he won't. The bets are out there on Roger and Novak for fun and so I can sell a portion of that position if they meet in the semis which I think will happen! During this Tournament I will be rolling bets on Rafa and Roger to pick up some change here and there, if Rafa does some how lose I realistically lose $250 but to me it feels like $100 because only that will come out of pocket the $150 on blowdog is free money!
CurtisSumpter says:
05/24/09 02:46AM
Lucky: Sorry for the outburst, if you have insight let me know. Im banking on the fact that Federer and Nole meet in the semis but Noles lack of heart scares me! I deep down feel like we see Roger v. Rafa again with Rafa lifting his 5th straight title at RG, but I think we see a Nole and Roger semi and I wanted to put $100 to win $750 on Nole to win RG and hope that him and Fed meet and I get rid of half my position, what do you think of that idea. Or which way should I go with the futures?
CurtisSumpter says:
05/24/09 03:02AM
Added $50 on Nole and Roger!
rod_steel says:

Hewitt -3.5 over Karlovic - (-115) (3)

H2h stands 3-0 to Karlovic but 2 on grass and 1 on hardcourt. This is Hewitt's best chance to get a win over Karlovic for the main reason that the serve of Karlovic is somewhat negated on clay and his lack of movement on the surface once the ball is in play will be exposed by Hewitt who although is in the twilight of his career has been fairly consistent on clay over the past few seasons when he dropped out of the top 10

05/24/09 03:29AM

Loit over Bacsinszky - (-125) (3)

This is a bit of a toss up in that both players are coming off long layoffs through injury however am siding with Loit who is better on clay and also fact that Bacsinszky simply hasn't had the matches this season reflected by the fact that she has only 1 MD win.

Well Hewitt looks terrible right now and Loit chokes away a set and a break lead in her match

Decided to pass on the Gulbis match, instead looked at the Benesova/Georges match in the ladies. Only reason I see that Benesova is at evens against the German is because of her retirement in Madrid due to some kind of viral infection. However reading her blog she writes she has fully recovered and practiced on the RG courts over the past couple of days.

Hey Rod, love your theory on letdowns...i clearly remember reading a nba post of urs a while ago in which u talked about letdowns after big wins as being a fundamental of capping the game but i agree it applies to all sports including the tennis tonight.

i just hope davy hasn't been paid of Boris and his mafia mates and we see him retire hurt or lose in 3 sets badly or maybe just have a two bad service games late in the 5th...anything can happen with davy, but im with u tonight!

i like sam stosur to get past her next opponent too, what are ur thoughts?

Its Federers tournament to lose now and i would be completely shocked if Federer does not start playing his best tennis and clinch his long awaited French Open title. In saying that, i am going to put a large bet on Federer to make the Final at 1.55 and hope he wins the tournament too. I won't get greedy and take him to win the tournament just incase he screws up.

Nadal -10.5 over Gabashvili - (-110) (4)

Point construction and patience is the key against Nadal to be semi competitive on clay and Gabashvili has neither in his game. Nadal murders these kind of oppoenents and after a nice warmup against Daniel in round 1 I have a feeling Rafa will bring his A game today.

Davydenko -3.5 over Soderling - (-115) (4)

Element of this play based on their being a major letdown for Soderling after beating Rafa. Davydenko's return of serve was outstanding against both Wawrinka and Verdasco and the fact that he takes the ball so early off both wings will ensure that Soderling does not get into any rhythm in the rallies. Aware that the clay H2h is in Soderling's favor but having not played each other for over 2 years and not over a best of 5 set match somewhat mitigates this IMO.

Might make a play in the first semi-final between Gonzo and Soderling. Given the way both have been serving over the past 10 days really like the over games proposition.

Don't think there is going to be much in this one, both players hit heavy and have been serving very well throughout the tournament. Soderling has impressed me with his consistency off both wings however going to take a shot at the over games.

Soderling/Gonzalez "over" 40.5 games - (-115) (3)

Looks a rock solid parlay. Safina on SL which suits her more, I'm expecting a beatdown today after a tough match (which she needed IMO) against Vika in the QF.

My apologies of course both womens SFs will be played on Phillippe Chatrier not sure what I was thinking before.

Leaving both matches alone today, just hope Kuznetsova has recovered after that long match yesterday against Serena.

I see nothing other than a comfortable Federer win to be honest. I've seen this same scenario before played out at the Aussie Open in 2007. Back then it was Gonzo who was red hot for the whole fortnight but when it came to the final his inexperience was obvious and Federer simply exploited that. However I admit Federer isn't playing anywhere near as well as he was back then, still making a ton of errors off both wings.

Not as well as I would like to have gone this tournament but it's better to be in the black then in the red I suppose. Onto the grass season now, strawberries and cream

hoping the finals go to 5 sets as well

thinking Fed +600 in 5

to even out my Sod +2500 and Fed +500 bets

robbypants says:

No, it means he has to win by 5 games.  It is the best of 5 sets(First player to win 3 sets).

robbypants says:

By 6 games not 5...

I bet on Serena to hedge the Kuz future a little . Here's hoping Kuz and Dinara meet in the final

Same rooting interests as you so good luck... but I only have a futures bet on Safina (would be my biggest tennis payout ever) so if Kuz goes down today I would not be too mad even if it ruins my parlay, since she is Safina's only competition. I think you won't have to stress much at all but like you wrote, who knows with this tournament.

A Kuz/Safina/Fed parlay for even money looks awesome right about now. I also cannot see Safina/Kuz losing in the semis. They have been miles ahead of everyone else in the clay court season so I doubt that changes now. Nice hit on Kuz.
BurningPlanet26 says:

They are most likely doing it to give SL a premeire match on the day to motivate people to buy tickets, since Fed and Monfils are on other court and they are very expensive. I think that is a sharp angle, realizing this slower court favors Kuz. I have also read it will be cold and that would favor her even more. The only question will be intimidation and mental toughness. GL.
