In the Trenches: Divisional Round Thoughts

Patriots caught with Rex Ryan’s foot in mouth.

That was likely the last thing everyone outside of New York expected after the Jets ran their mouths all week.  That 45-3 thrashing New England handed them in December was still fresh in everyone’s minds, including these underdog New York Jets who are back in the AFC Championship game for the second straight year.

Thoughts

Jets Fly Away-The only concern Jet fans should have is that Rex Ryan has decided to not make next weekend’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers “personal” (Ryan is 2-0 in games of that magnitude).  Not nearly as unlikely as the Seahawks upset last weekend, but this game wasn’t too far behind in the eyes of many, begging the question:

Why?

Nearly a double digit favorite all week, New England’s blowout win a month ago had driven the notion that this game stood no chance of being competitive.  For whatever reason the Jets defense was completely brushed aside as nothing special (just ask Bart Scott), but what was overwhelmingly believed was that Mark Sanchez and the running game couldn’t compete with Tom Brady and keep them off the field.  Then again, it wasn’t ab... In the Trenches: Wild Card Weekend Thoughts

Awkward silence.

That’s probably the best way to sum up the Seattle Seahawks upset (understatement) over the New Orleans Saints, last year’s Super Bowl winner.  After a season full of mockery on my part and many others, few, if any expected the Seahawks to even compete against New Orleans.  Not only did we see a team under .500 win a division for the first time in NFL history, we saw them win a playoff game.

Yeah, awkward silence.

Thoughts

Seahawks Shock World-The New Orleans Saints were a double digit favorite coming into Saturday’s Wild Card matchup against the 7-9 NFC West winner in Seattle.  They were laughed at, given as much a chance to win it all as the other 20 teams to have missed the playoffs.  So when Marshawn Lynch’s clinching 67-yard-touchdown run resulted in the majority of the peewee-esque Saints defense on the turf, most were left speechless; except for the Seahawk players, who expected to win the game.

Right.

Credit the Seahawks for not rolling over like they were supposed to, but what about that Saints defense?  Forget the 41 points allowed to a us... [More]

In the Trenches: Week 17 Thoughts

The NFL Season: Dust in the wind.

It seemed like only yesterday Drew Brees and Brett Favre faced off in the season opener back in September.  Since then Brees has paced the New Orleans Saints back to the playoffs while we’ve learned over the past four months that more likely than not, you’ve been sexually harassed via text message by Brett Favre.  Needless to say, his legacy has taken quite a hit.

Dust in the wind.

Thoughts

Green Bay Wins-A preseason favorite for the Super Bowl; the Packers make the playoffs, but struggled along the way as players dropped like flies, losing their running game along the way.  Against a Chicago Bears unit that played their starters with nothing on the line, Green Bay trailed for most of the game until a fourth quarter rally led to a 10-3 victory.  Green Bay may be one dimensional, but Aaron Rodgers is hot and no team is looking forward to facing him.

Giants Win, Go Home-They did their part, but didn’t get the help they needed from Chicago.  As a result, the 10-6 New York Giants will watch the play... [More]
