Is anyone else as excited

...as I am to bet against the Arizona Cardinals?

After the Cardinals-Giants game, I became incredibly excited when I soon realized I would have a chance to bet against them in the playoffs.

This team is a joke.  They have no threat of a running game which is usually a key component of winning playoff football.

Has Kurt Warner actually WON a game for this team, or did they have to win by default against their division opponents.  I'm willing to accept the latter.  That defense can't get a team off the field when it matters.  This team peaked when they beat the Cowboys, despite their best efforts to choke that one away.

The Falcons have the perfect team to win in the playoffs on the road.  I'll even still consider Matt Ryan as a rookie, even though he outperformed most of the veterans in this league.  Rookie QB on the road might make you nervous, but when you have an RB like Michael Turner you can take the pressure off the of the kid.  There is a reason his nickname is Matty Ice, and that is because he can make plays when it matters.  Proof is in the pudding.

If anyone can find a place I can place a prop that John Abraham forces a Kurt Warner fumble I'd appreciate it.

FALCONS -1 TO THE BANK!!!

I at least offered up some reasoning behind me loving the Falcons.  If you are going to bash it you should at least have a rebuttal to my argument.

I think you should taper that enthusiasm when you consider some of the following factors that will be working against the Falcons in a big way:

Playing a rookie qb on the road; going up against one of the best passing games in the league; and third and most important, the fact that that stadium will be absolutely ROCKING for a team that hasn't hosted a playoff game in God knows how long. I don't think anyone should underestimate the electricity that will be running through that stadium in this spot.

I agree with you, I don't think much of the Cardinals. But, the Cardinals at home, against a porous pass defense and a rookie quarterback is a spot that sounds like a winning proposition.

Are we even sure that home field advantage exists in this league outside of the NFC South anymore. Again, I'm well aware of how rowdy that crowd can be. However, I do recall a certain Shaun Hill not being phased by this crowd (until the last minute anyways), and nothing takes the air out of the crowd quicker than a solid running game that eats chunks of yards. The Falcons have that in Michael Turner, and even add a homerun threat in Jerious Norwood. I do recall this same rookie QB going into San Diego and throwing wild on them, while holding another great passing offense in check. Given both teams records at the time that was a playoff game, as neither could really afford the loss.

Yes the cardinals have a great passing offense, but when you have no threat of a running game it gets a little easier to defend them. Fumbling is a disease for Kurt Warner, and if Arizona has anyone that can stop Abraham off the edge I would be more than interested to hear that argument.

My last thought on this....THE CARDINALS MADE TAVARIS JACKSON LOOK LIKE STARTING QB IN THIS LEAGUE. Matt Ryan is technically more experienced, a better overall QB, and has better weapons around him.

This team is fools gold, 6 wins vs the worst division in football, a win against the Dolphins in the 2nd week of the season before they found stride, a win agains the bills in which they knocked out Edwards and exposed the Bills for what they were, and a win over the overrated Cowboys.

It's your money do what you want, I just want someone who can come up with a sound argument to bet the Cardinals other than "Rookie QB on road". If you finish in the top 5 of MVP voting are you still a rookie?

Don't forget about Edgerrin James bro He's been standing on the sidelines since week 5 he's well rested and he's a sleeper a wild card here! Cards have to many weapons and their at home! Ya they stunk it up against philly,Minny and NE but those games really didn't matter at the time as they pretty much had their weak division locked! I still have some things to look at but if I can't pull the trigger on the cards then I will most likely play the total but hope this has helped and good luck

They had there week division locked....they were also playing for a bye so don't give me that b.s. ill just pretend i never read the edgerrin james comment. He lost his job to a guy who barely cracked 300 yards this year.

My strongest lean this week.
Atlanta just seems like they want it.
They can put points up. We know that for sure.

Az hasn't really done much to impress me.
Yeah...they beat Dallas but I mean??? Is that really something major??

GO TURNER THER BURNER!!!!

200+ and 3 TD'S

If I were going to save money for a large bet, I would save it up to fade Zona after they win this week and have to go on the road against either NY or Carolina.  I will play either one of those teams regardless of what the spread is.  This game however is a different story.  I think Zona wins by at least a TD.

BigHans looks like he took a minute to think...seahawks game edge came out and gave a taste of the run game he and tim hightower will open up in the playoffs. This in turn will open up passing to who oHHH 3 amazing receivers Boldin, FITZ(hope everyone saw his catches sunday), and well under rated steve breston. If the Cards offensive line can hold, you all should expect a win in AZ come Saturday 230. I WILL BE THERE GOIN NUTS. I am bias but what I just told you is not. Defense WILL step up.

Minn had Atl in week 14 and was the victim of believing a rookie could not win a big road game. Minn was in a supposed must win situation at the time. I am impressed more by Ryan than either Leinart or Warner. Take the rookie because he does not play like one. Brings to mind another rookie QB that took it all the way. Big Ben. More important than what the Atl. offense will do is the fact that Ariz has zero running game. Atlanta has defense enough to cover Ariz receivers but will be unloading strong blitzes without fear of a strong run offense. Atl. has one of the strongest running games in football. It does not take much to hand off to Norwood or Turner whether you are a rookie or Brett Favre.

Well i dont know about betting purposes, but as far as the CARDS are concerned i would love to see them go 1 and done. Going 9-7 in the easiest division in the NFL is hardly an accomplishment. The Falcons and Matt Ryan, now there's an accomplishment.

The only reason they even got 6 wins is because they have arguably the 2 best WR's in the game today..........will they stop the FALCONS run game? Now there is a different story, oh wait they also have a great wr in RODDY WHITE. Seems like you have to worry about the run and pass, wish i could say the same about the one dimensional cards.

dixie351 says:
12/29/08 09:15PM
this is exactly how i am basing my pick. Cards get there by winning an extremely weak division, versus Atl getting there by surviving in a pretty strong division. Home field has been an advantage for the Cards. You can definitely say Dallas is not a win to brag about. They did beat Miami pretty impressively at home, so something to think about. The way the Vikes blasted them at home is something to think about to. there is that stipulation that the Vikes were playing for alot more if you buy into that propaganda. I don't. But after all this needless chatter, I like the Falcons.
BuddyGreene says:

Cards will have nearly four weeks to decide what they like in their offensive playbook without having to show anyone else. Throw in the over-confidence by bettors in the Falcons and I'm taking the Cardinals. However, I'm holding out and hoping line goes to +3. Other than the Eagles, I don't think anybody blitzes better than the Cardinals in the NFC; problems for Matty Ice.
scho525 says:
12/30/08 12:54AM
really...how would that be a problem for matty ice, he dropped back 480 times this year....16 sacks and 9 ints, and you don't think he was being blitzed heavily as a rookie. might also be tough to blitz when the falcons crank out 4-5 yards a carry.
PistolPete21 says:

Come on, Van, you're better than this kind of reasoning. Yeah, of course, you can come at me with the Big Ben rookie QB getting through the playoffs example. Ryan's rookie status is only partly the issue for me. The Falcons don't have the kind of stingy defense that those Steelers had back in the day. Those Steelers were full of players who had been to the playoffs. Unlike those Steelers, these Falcons are coming off a horrific season, and this is their first go of it in the playoffs as a group. There's litlte doubt Ryan's a future Pro Bowler and might lead a team to a Super Bowl one day. But, unfortunately for the Falcons, they're led by a rookie QB, while Big Ben's Steelers were led by veterans on both sides of the ball.

the purpose of this blog was cause i wanted to see if there was any elements of the game i might have overlooked, and maybe a cardinals backer would point them out to me....but so far nothing

for the hundredth time this is probably the best rookie qb of all time, the kid was able to handle everything jim johnson threw at him and if not for a blown call the falcons would have had the ball with a chance to win the game, but either way its the running back which is why you take the falcons, they cards d gives up a solid 4 yards a carry, not a great stat for going up against the runner up in the rushing title

secret weapon.....you guys seen this harry douglas character the falcons have been trotting out there lately and lining up every possible way on offense...well hes also a pretty good special teamer, and area that the cardinals are weak in

these cardinals are the worst team in the playoffs, only other team in the convo is the vikings and they smoked the cardinals in arizona, and don't mention the dolphins and how the cards beat them cause that was in week 2 and the wildcat had not been born yet

again cardinals backers, give me some kind of reason other than a rookie qb, or the prowess of kurt warner (who has played terrible lately, and is behind tavaris the most sure thing for a 3+ turnover game)

I don't know this game could be a little tricky.  I haven't seen many people on the Cardinals at all and Matt Ryan has yet to prove himself in the PLAYOFFS.  Granted he has played great in the regular season but it seems way too obvious for Atlanta to be the play.  Arizona is a good home team and I am not saying I expect them to go to the Super Bowl but they may beat the Falcons.

Im leaning the Falcons this week and I think im placing a small bet on them, but they won't make it further...

My bigest play this week is the Eagles..

Dolphins should win it, but I like the Colts more...

this is a good game to stay away from.being a cardinal fan, i have watched all 16 games.easy conference. yes.dallas win was very big.this was when dallas was very formidable.very lopsided, although we let them get lucky at end.any road game is tough, except in conf. but cards are capable of beating anyone at home. if forced to bet , its atlanta. but i cant understand line opening at -2 1/2 and going down to 1. must be lots of rich people in arizona. GO CARDS!!

Fact check:  Yes, Big Ben did go 13-0 as a starter when he was forced into action by an injury to Maddox in Game 2, and led the team to a 15-1 record.  He won his first playoff game against an inferior NYJets team (yes, it was at home, unlike this weekend), and then got whooped by the Patriots in the next round.

So if history were to repeat itself, the rookie Ryan and ATL are good for a win against the much inferior Cards, but then watch out against CAR or NYG.

ATL was a last second CAR field goal from the #2 seed in the NFC.  ARI is only good at home, and then (usually) only against weak opponents.

ATL is my biggest play of the weekend...probably of the entire playoffs....not because they are ATL, but because they are against ARI.
