So the first BCS standings of 2009 have been released and to no one’s surprise, the Florida Gators—+125 to win this season’s BCS championship at most online sportsbooks—are Kings of the college football hill followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the two-spot.
Strangely enough though, Florida dropped to No. 2, trumped by ‘Bama in the Associated Press poll but football fans in “The Swamp” probably don’t care, as their team is tops in the more prestigious poll.
Florida’s first game as the top BCS team is on the road against the Mississippi State Bulldogs and it is a big 22.5-point road fave and with a Total of 48.5.
The Gators will be looking to maintain No. 1 and this Saturday’s game will mark the fifth-straight week when they’ve been favored by double-digits.
The defending BCS champs have been a college football machine rattling off 16 consecutive straight up wins in a row. For sports bettors, when betting against the spread, in their last 14 games in which a betting line has been posted, the Gators sport an 11-2-1 ATS mark – not too shabby at all.
In Florida’s last 11 games when favored by more than 8-points, they have also been impressive, going 8-2-1 against the spread.
After last week’s scare for Florida, this might be a spot where they look to really trounce an opponent.

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree will make his debut in his home state of Texas, and The Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat reported there's a good chance he will start.
Online Sportsbook
Football Predictions is providing information on Michael Crabtree.
Singletary has long given Crabtree the benefit of the doubt, believing the former Texas Tech star will shine at this level. Even if that meant playing catch-up in the past two weeks after missing so much time with a contract holdout.
"There are some things that you can prepare him for, but there are other things that he just has to go through and I think that this is one of them," Singletary said of Crabtree's first game.
"You have to let those guys line up against him and put their hands on you and see some of the complexities of the defense and how they are setting you up. You come to the sideline with your head on a swivel a little bit, but I don't think that it's going to be too big for him. To me, even though he's come in late, he looks like he's ready."
Crabtree's teammates seem to have moved past his prolonged contract impasse, and are more focused now on what he can do to help the team. San Francisco (3-2) leads the NFC West, with wins already over the reigning NFC champion Arizona Cardinals and Seattle.

When planning out how the conclusion to the NFL betting card for Week 6 would shape up, this matchup between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers couldn’t have been scripted any better. ESPN has to be happy with this matchup.
On one side of the field, an AFC West team that has surprised many with its .500 start and defensive struggles, desperately seeking to generate something positive out of its second divisional game of the year. And then on the other, an opponent that has already established dominance in the West with wins at home and abroad and looks to this game as a chance to prove to a national TV audience that they are indeed for real.
It all sounds about right; only thing is that somebody forgot to let the Broncos in on the plan.
In a complete role reversal, Denver has busted out of the gate this season with a 5-0 SU/ATS start. Critics shot holes in the record at 3-0, citing the win at Cincinnati as fluke and the triumphs over Cleveland and Oakland as compulsory. But come from behind victories the past two weeks against Dallas and a New England silenced most detractors. The Patriots response to that overtime loss in Denver – a 59-0 blowout vs. Tennessee on Sunday – quieted the rest.
Online sportsbooks have the odds on this one set at -3.5 on the home side Chargers heading into Monday’s

The first Bowl Championship Series rankings (BCS Rankings) of 2009 will be released this Sunday and as it stands, the Top 3 college football teams, according to the Associated Press and ESPN, are the Florida Gators, the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns.
Let’s take a look at
Football Predictions of NCAA football odds for the top three teams as the sports betting public prepares for the rankings.
Florida Gators
The song remains the same in the No. 1 position as the Gators have maintained their perch atop the Division I rankings since the preseason rankings were released.
Back in early-August, Florida was listed as the odds-on favorite to win both the Southeastern Conference (-225) and repeat as BCS champions (+200).
While the Gators started off the season with two soft opponents (Charleston Southern and Troy), they have faced three sturdier challenges recently and have passed the test, going 3-0 straight up.
Florida defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 23-13 back on September 19 but failed to cover as favorites of 30-something.
They hammered the Kentucky Wildcats 41-7, covering a 20-something pointspread, but received a scare when star QB Tim Tebow suffered a concussion.
Tebow bounced back in a game against LSU a few weeks later when the Gators defeated the Tigers 13-3, covering at 7.5-point...

Week 5 of the 2009 NFL regular season has come to a close which means it's time for another installment of my power rankings. These power rankings are for week 6 of the football season.
Online Sportsbook
Football Predictions is providing the information on 2009 NFL Power Rankings for Week 6.
There's a top-five intruder in the Week 6 edition of ESPN.com's 2009 NFL Power Rankings.
The Denver Broncos, who began this season ranked No. 27, now rate No. 5 according to the latest poll of our experts. The undefeated Broncos vaulted three places after edging the New England Patriots in Week 5. The Broncos will have their mettle tested in Week 6 when they visit the No. 16 San Diego Chargers, who opened our regular-season rankings seeded fifth.
Entering Week 6 play, the top four teams remain, in descending order, the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. The Giants visit the Saints in this week's best clash.
Elsewhere in the poll, the Cincinnati Bengals surged to No. 6, up five spots on the strength of a victory over the host Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens, our leaders for Weeks 3 and 4, now rank No. 11. They can re-establish their claim for top-five consideration if they can beat the No. 3 Vikings on the road Sunday.

It’s been a while since the New York Yankees made a World Series and you need to go back nine years since they captured one, but both the sports betting public and fans alike are having a difficult time seeing anyone beating them this year.
The Yankees had the best record in the entire regular season at 103-59 and swept the Minnesota Twins 3-0 in their American League Divisional Series.
It won’t be a straight path to the World Series however as the Yanks face the Los Angeles Angels, who were 97-65 in the regular season and also had an ALDS sweep, taking down the Boston Red Sox 3-0.
Online Sportsbook has the Yankees as the odds-on faves to win the World Series at -125 while the Angels are +350 to win it all.

Remember that classic Monday Night Football game where the New York Jets came back to defeat the Miami Dolphins in 2000–the one that was correctly predicted by Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Online Sportsbook is providing information on Football News and
Football Predictions.
After losing three straight, Miami came up with a huge effort vs. Buffalo to notch its first win in Week 4. The Dolphins will look to make it two in a row on Monday night at home vs. the Jets before heading into their bye week. So far, this game has seen plenty of attention from bettors, and almost all of it has gone to either visiting New York or the OVER. Is this the second straight Monday night game where bettors win big?
Well the two teams New York Jets and Miami Dolphins will meet again on MNF tonight and while we can’t promise another “Monday Night Miracle,” it will be a good AFC East battle–the Jets are 2.5-point road faves and the Total is set at 36.
The Jets have dominated their last 11 contests in Miami, going 8-3 straight up and 10-1 against the spread and have covered in their last six-straight road games against the Dolphins.

Baseball is grabbing a little of the spotlight, but it’s still football that still takes center stage in October.
Football Betting - NCAA Previews:
A marquee matchup in college football is set for Saturday evening when the No. 1 Florida Gators head to Baton Rouge to play the No. 4 LSU Tigers. Online sportsbooks have the nation’s consensus top team favored by 7.5-points with a Total of 46.
But the question going into that key SEC matchup is will Florida be able to cover and win without the services of potential 2009 Heisman candidate Tim Tebow?
The Gators last saw action two weeks ago when they hammered the Kentucky Wildcats 41-7, unfortunately QB Tebow was hammered as well and suffered a concussion.
Florida had last week off, allowing Tebow extra time to rest and the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner was able to practice this week but hasn’t been given medical clearance to play and will be a game-time decision.
“After [Tuesday’s] practice, I was told to game plan with the intent that there's a chance that Tim could play. That's all I know,” Florida head coach Urban Meyer told ESPN.
“All the other stuff . . . we'll make a decision as we get closer.”
NCAA Trends:
The Gators are 3-0 against the spread vs. the LSU Tigers during Tebow’s time in Gainesville and are 11-3 ATS against LSU in their last 14.
Florida is also 6-1 ATS...

Hey, I’ll admit it, I’m one of those people who complain about how long the baseball season is…but there’s something about October baseball and the annual Fall Classic that is truly magical…and makes the journey all worthwhile.
The Twinkies needed an extra game, but they finally disposed of the Tigers, capturing the American League Central division. The reward was a quick trip to the airport to head to New York for a game the next night.
Online
Sportsbook opened the series with the Twins as underdogs in series price betting at +300, while the series price for the Yanks is -400.
After losing the opener 7-2, Minnesota is now 5-16 in their last 21 games against the Bronx Bombers and currently on an eight-game Yankee losing streak.
The Twins have been equally atrocious in the Big Apple going 4-17 in their last 21 and are currently mired in a nine-game road slide vs. the Evil Empire.
The other ALDS matchup sees the Boston Red Sox in Los Angeles to play the Angels.
Playoff Baseball Odds: The BoSox are favored to take the series at -130 and the Angels are +110 underdogs.
Game 1 for the Boston-L.A. Angels series will go Thursday with the Red Sox listed at -110 and the Angels are paying out at Even money.
John Lackey will get the start for the Angels and in his last 17 outings against the BoSox, the LAA have struggled mightily going 3-14 SU.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning was held out of practice on Wednesday to receive treatment on his injured foot according to ESPN.

The NY Times reports that Manning has plantar fasciitis in his right foot and team doctors have told him he can play against Oakland but it will be “painful.”
But Manning said that if the swelling goes down and the pain is tolerable, his goal is to be back at practice by tomorrow.
Manning suffered a right foot injury against Kansas City last week and could play this week depending on his pain threshold.
Despite Manning’s status, the Giants were listed as huge 17-point home faves for Sunday but the game has since been taken off the board.

For the third season in a row, and the second consecutive year in the AL Central, two MLB teams will play a 163rd game.
As it stands, the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers are tied for the AL Central lead with identical 86-76 records and will break the tie tonight.
Minnesota was a bridesmaid last year when the Chicago White Sox defeated them 1-0 in a one-game playoff and now they get a second crack at it this year vs. the Detroit Tigers.
The game would’ve gone yesterday but a certain Minnesota Vikings QB was playing against his former team at the Metrodome resulting in the Tuesday night game time. Online sportsbooks have the Twins listed as -165 home faves, the Tigers as +150 road ‘dogs and the Over/Under is 8.5.
The Twins were hot down the stretch, going 10-3 straight up, and putting up some runs, as “Over” bettors cashed in. Minnesota posted 9 Overs, 2 Unders and a Push in their last 12 starts.
The Tigers stumbled their way down the stretch, going 3-7 SU in their last 10 games.
Looking at the head-to-head numbers, the last nine times these two met in Minnesota, the Twins have been the dominant team, posting a 7-2 mark.
Righty Rick Porcello will be tasked with helping the Tigers capture the AL Central division but in his last eight road starts, he has struggled, with his team recording a 2-6 mark.
RHP Scott Baker will get the start for the home team Twins and in his last 10 games overall against the Detroit Tigers, ...

There’s one game left to close out Week 4 and what a matchup it is. This week’s Monday nighter between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings will easily be the highest rated NFL game of the season so far, and likely still be number one when the 2009 schedule closes.
This Monday nighter will also be the most wagered on game of the young season, as the betting started early last week and has continued right through. Red, the head linesmaker for
Online Betting sportsbook reported steady action all week, “sports fans and bettors have been looking forward to this game since the day Favre signed with the Vikings, and that’s been reflected in the betting action we’ve seen this week. There’s definitely been more early volume bet on this matchup than the usual Monday nighter. After the Sunday afternoon games ended, we saw a real spike on this one, as bettors turned their attention to the Sunday nighter and Monday nighter.”
The line opened with the Vikes favored by a field goal across the board, but almost immediately the books started to raise the juice on the favourite, as the sports betting public sided squarely with Brett Favre and the Vikings. By Saturday, as college football bettors began weighing in on the NFL card en masse, the line officially moved to -4 across the board.
Favre and his Vikings have fought to a 3-0 record straight up, covering the pointspread in tw...

The MLB playoffs begin Tuesday when the Detroit Tigers travel to Minnesota to play the Twins in a one-game playoff game to determine the winner of the AL Central.
The Detroit Tigers have had months to solidify themselves as the AL Central champions. They had ample opportunity in head-to-head games against the foes that challenged them. Their main foe, the Minnesota Twins, lost Justin Morneau down the stretch to injury.
But you know what? Unless Minnesota manages to rally back to a tie in the American League Central Division after 162 games are played, the Tigers never again have to step inside the place I disdainfully lovingly call Hubert's House of Horrors again. And they left it in a fine position for winning the division.

Rick Porcello starts for Detroit and in his last eight road games, the Tigers are merely 2-6 straight up.
Scott Baker will take the mound for the home team and in his last 13 home starts, Minnesota has gone 10-3 SU.
The Twins are 6-2 SU in their last eight home tilts against the Detroit Tigers.
The winner will move on to face the New York Yankees.
