Best bet of the week: Troy (-23.5)

This game pits the best team in the Sun Belt against the worst team in the Sun Belt (the who?)... the Sun Belt.  It's basically the Bible Belt conference but college football likes to keep religion out of it!  That's too bad for North Texas because it will take an act of God to keep this game close.  North Texas is giving up 50.7 points per game on "defense"... good enough for them to rank 120th in Div 1 (FBS) football... that's pretty bad considering i thought there were only 119 teams...

Big 12 game of the week:  Oklahoma (-19)

This game gives us our first opportunity to bet on one of the Big 4 against the sieve that is the Kansas St defense.  After two straight non-covers (the last one because of a meaningless garbage TD by Kansas in the final :30), the OU bandwagoners have left the building.  This allows me to enjoy the mini-bar while i watch the Sooners shred this "defense" on each and every drive.  Give the punter the day off, Stoops...

Mismatch of the week:  Ball St (-23.5)

This isn't the MAC game of the week because that honor goes to CMich - Toledo, simply because the line is more favorable.  But this game pits probably the best MAC team against the worst.  EMich is another one of those bet against teams in CFB.  Don't really need to look at their opponent, but in this case we get a high-powered and efficient Ball St team, coming off of their bye week, playing against an EMich team that still has no had a bye this year.  Trust me, they are tired of playing football.  And they will be tired of this game by halftime.  Nate Davis is a stud QB and will enjoy the stat-padding opportunity in this one...

SEC game of the year:  Alabama (-6)

How much does Alabama hate Tennessee?  Let's put it this way... a lot!  Since returning from their probationary status, the Tide haven't had the kind of talent to really pound Fulmer's team for his role in their punishment.  This year they do, and they will.  Tennessee is a joke!  That hasn't changed since their route against Florida.  Even Georgia dominated UT, despite the fact that the final score looked relatively close.  UGA had 3 very impressive drives inside the redzone that resulted in inly 3 points in that game.  Bama has meanwhile coasted to a couple of non-cover wins, which, once again, has left the bandwagon vacant.  It's so empty i might have to drive... i see a total ass-whooping in this game from start to finish, with Tennessee getting blanked on the scoreboard.

I love my rock chalk jayhawks but Tech beats them this year.

Shinka, NMS is not Troy. Idaho is pretty close to North Texas though. Idaho still gives up less slack than the Mean Green. New Mexico State has played up a few times this year but 15 is very close to the 17 I had it capped at. I've bet NMS twice this year and this one is WAAAAY closer than Troy/North Texas.

You want to hear some up and coming garage bands, head to Denton, Texas. If you want to see some football, head in the opposite direction.

Additionally, 17 points is a number based on how terrible Idaho is not how good The aggies are. New Mexico state is mid pack minor major AT BEST. Troy on the other hand would be TCU or Fresno level if they played in any higher conference than they do. They are outstanding considering all their hindrances to acquiring good players.

You never hear about it because Texas and SEC schools usurp all the good players but Louisiana is a great high school football state. If Louisiana was able to keep players in state, they would rival Texas and Florida in production per capita.

Yeah, definitely hear you on NMS not being Troy. However, they've had some impressive road wins this season at Nevada and UTEP. Meanwhile, Idaho speaks for itself as it is, but they've only been within two TDs once this season at Fresno of all teams.

If nothing else I was thinking of teasing NMS with Troy and Bama.

Well and I think that also leads nicely into "Leave last week last week".

Sure, we learn who is who each and every week but you cannot let you anger at a team not covering or your attempts at chasing a team who did cover lead you down a bad path.

Take Texas for instance. Last week all we heard was "due for a let down" and "what have they shown" and the majority bet Mizzou +4 and a few +7 (as if it mattered) And now this week we have Texas against an equally strong OSU team and EVERYONE is on Texas. Some because they got burned in mizzou. some because they didn't bet Texas. and a lot more because they saw texas cover huge.

Texas showed ME and people who pay attention NOTHING new from the OU game to the Mizzou game. Same team, same play calling , same execution. this wasn't a shock. Ok...maybe 7 points high but still.

People talk about betting against the public and thats all well and good. this week you have a chance to bet against a public set line. The line on Texas OSU should be 9 tops. Public hysteria meant it was set high and may go even higher. Alabama is exactly the same. Piss poor Tenn team against a good alabama team who hasn't covered but scores WAY better than any SEC team much less the pathetic Vols.

Leave last week in last week. Hold no grudges and don't chase winners. Hold a grudge and you miss out on an Alabama pay day. Chase winners and Texas Tech will fuck you by not covering.

I have faith, just give it time. I still hold Kansas and Tech in higher regard. Falsely so probably..but I just can't shake my gut.

I still have them covering 14 at Texas though. Don't want them to but I think they get it done.

Shepherd, Like all the picks this week and curious, do you follow horse racing at all? The Breeders Cup is Saturday and it looks predetermined that Curlin will repeat. I don't see Smooth Air @ 50-1, maybe 20-1. I learn alot from following your cfb & NFL picks. What's your take on the Classic? I know this blog is cfb and I'm sorry to interject. I LOVE solid discussion. It get my brain churning and helps me analyze better.

I stopped trusting my gut reading too much bullshit on covers and you have helped me find it again. I think my best weapon is the fact I don't care who wins any games outside of Texas and even then I know how to be rational. If I can rationally examine a Texas game, the team I was indoctrinated to love from birth, I feel I can be fair and objective anywhere. That's my barometer.

I don't always agree on individual games but I agree 100% on your theory and practice and THAT is what's important. Once you have that down, the games are just the execution of such.

This is just my second year. Give me a few more years THEN maybe I won't need your threads or your picks. Till then, preach on.

Shep - I'm not a poster but I've been an avid reader of the forum since the beginning of the year, and found your threads to be the most valuable threads on the site BY FAR (minus all the idiots posting garbage in your threads). I couldn't believe it when I saw they banned you, but I'm thrilled to finally find your "home" so I can start reading your postings once again. This is the only Covers page I'll be visiting in the future. Those moderators got rid of the best they had going on their site, and are too dumb to realize it.

Anyway, I think it worked out for the best becuase this blog is a much better forum for your insights and discussion, which I find extremely valuable and wanted to thank you for. I also appreciate the insight from the other contributors as well, such as Mazda and the others. It's great not having to wade through all the garbage.

shepherd, great writeups, and I will most likely go with the games on your writeups, as those were some of my leans too. But the under in NO/SD is an excellent point. Poor field conditions, along with the fact that this is probably a pro bowl like experience for these player, will keep them from playing their fullest.

shep, why the possible love for indy....they haven't really showed anything this year....both O and D line are terrible and Tenn O and D line are hitting on all cylinders....Tenn should run all over Indy....control clock....and score on Indy many times....

i don't think indy will be able to move the ball very well against Tenn's D....between the D line....of which is probably the best front four in the nfl.....and an up and coming secondary that is very good....harper and finnegan should lock down wayne and harrison....well maybe not lock down but do a very good job against them....holding them to limited number of yards....

both teams play twice a year...in same division....they know each other very well...have split last two years...i think....

not to mention that it is the first mon. night game in nashville since i think 03 or 04....i have season tickets so trying to be objective with this game....The titans are trying something new in the nfl with a code blue....much like penn st's white out...they will be giving blue t's to all that enter......the atmosphere should be electric.....

Tenn is 6-0 ats this year....

Indy is 3-3 ats....

i have bet Tenn every week they played and obviously have done well with it...

i might not bet the game seeing how i will be there but i will not be betting Indy....

just my 2 cents but i think tenn gets the win here by 7 - 10 pts.....

I don't think West Virginia should be a solid bet much less a best bet by any means. West Virginia is a struggling team in a struggling conference. Pat white or no Pat white, letting Syracuse cover on you is embarrasing. Letting them hold you under 20 points is unforgivable.

That said, I think if WVU scores 3+ times they cover simply because Auburn refuses to score.

Auburn is the better team and if they pull their heads out this week they win. There is good reason this game is close, cases can be made against both teams in a loss and not much case for either to win pulling away.

I am on WVU just because I see the scoring edge to them, they are at home (much like Texas, they are underrated at home) and lots of sharp money is coming in on them. I don't usually let sharps decide my picks to that extent but on Thursday night after a solid weekend, sure why not.

On the NFL East/West note, I play that about 1.5 times a week and the only East/West games I have lost this year are SF and Seattle both playing at home two weeks ago. SF had an epic collapse against Philly after leading most of the game. Seahawks got blown out.

West traveling east has been money.

Let last weeks game live in last week. take away what is important from the game and move on. People who are unable to move on are the people who make me money.

We all knew Auburn couldn't score and that an Auburn win hinged on their defense. West Virginia remembered where the end zone was, simple as that. Two underperforming teams where one decided to show up and play and the other played EXACTLY the same way they have all year.

Don't get mad over a -3 game. Auburn will make you money before the end of the year BECAUSE of this game if you can clear your head.

The logical reason would be sharp money on Kansas State. Perhaps the pro betters thought 19 was too much. You could certainly make a case for it being high since OU hasn't covered lately. I think your case would be flawed considering how bad KSU defense is.

I have OU -19 and added 1x at -17 since I couldn't sell -19 off without taking a hit on the juice.

The under in London is shot.

Considering last years game, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a score on every drive incentive this year.

Baltimore needs to score me one more TD and I am good for the day. The whole day looked like garbage to me so Baltimore is my only bet.

So Tulsa.

Hmmm.... I was hoping for 19-21 points on this one. Not only has Tulsa been all over ESPN (hello bandwagon) The defense seems content to let the offense win them games. They are flat out bad in some games. Not a nice combination. I do realize teams that score a lot tend to have statistically weak defenses due to late games substitutions, but Tulsa has given up some serious 1st half yardage as well.

I think the only saving grace keeping this spread from climbing may be people looking at the shared opponent of SMU.

What people don't realize is that SMU has coaching and players in place to play better than they have. Not any better than 3rd in the conference mind you, but well enough to scare a few teams. which is exactly what they did to Tulsa. That same team didn't play UCF. Crappy SMU played UCF and the score was similar to the Good SMU vs Tulsa game.

That said, UCF has a tendency to play up fairly well when they feel like it.

I may be on Tulsa as a whim, but the prospect of their defense not caring and UCF playing well doesn't bode well for a 23.5 line.

Some interesting notes I found while digging up on UCF, don't know if this is common knowledge or what:

Covers lists Jeramy Devane as out on personal leave. Apparently he has quit the team.

This is not THAT important but combined with this news story:

His counterpart on the OL, the other starter Minnich, has been dismissed from the team due to a DUI arrest last week. So two OLmen missing this week.

Im gonna take the Ravens big, ive been on the under all week for the london game. Just dont know how much to pull the trigger on it yet. I like TB as well at such a low line against a horribly struggling dallas team. Think the Bucs just are too physical for them and better as of now.

yea the OU total was very close, I lost on the only under of the day with Cincy and Uconn.. I lost a parlay with USC and C. Mich but won the oregon bama parlay easily. day was could but could have been better, always can be better or worse lol.. Up 7 units for the week cant ever complain.

Hopefully tomm. will be just as sucessful seeing as ive done well all year to this point.

EVerytime ive gone against the titans ive lost, if I take them now im afraid of the Colts to show up. Giving Tenn. 4 might just be too much, they kick too many mother f'in field goals.

That is a pretty good team, they can just put up points and dont make many mistakes. UCF is not a bad football team and Tulsa d was a little better than I thought. Good win to finish out

looks like I will be starting waaaay ahead for tommorrow.. I had an Oregon Bama parlay and the side bets on both. Bama was also a big bet, 3 for 4 again this weekend on big bets. Ball State made me mad especially to start the day. i was afraid troy would do the same but they found a way.
