How will Phil defend Dwight?

I'm wondering is he better off double teaming and leaving the Lakers to scramble to cover 3's?

Personally I think he's better off letting Dwight go off for 40-50 and hold the 3 point shooters to 45 or less.  I think those guys are so trigger happy that if the Lakers play Dwight staight up and let him abuse Odom, Bynum, and Gasol, the perimeter guys will get anxious and take horrible 3 point attempts just because they are frustrated.  Its well known that an offensive player plays better defense when he scores because he's having more "fun" and feels part of the game.  If you take that away from Hedo, Lewis, Alston, Lee, Pietrus, they'll get frustrated over time and Orlando will lose all cohesiveness.

Eh just my opinion but sounds like a good plan to me.

Look what Cleveland did and where it got them?

Multiple looks, multiple guys. Lot of help down from Kobie and DFish. Lakers need Bynum to find what he's shown in flashes. If not, quick substitutions.

I agree with you about the general approach. Celtics (even the depleted Celtics) did the best job on him even with guys like John Scalabrini and a suddenly hapless Mikey Moore. You front, you single cover, you get help from the guards, you live with some jump hooks.

He will have Kareem come in off the bench  or have Odom take him out. I do not know how many times I have seen Lamar involved in accidents on the court. It must be the candy.

I believe that your scenario is highly probable about the fouls.

The company men (as Donaghy called them) too many times influence games and outcomes.

To me, they should be invisible to the game and only call fouls if a player gains a clear advantage offensively or defensively or violates the NBA rules about blocking or charging with the resticted area in the paint

Too many times, the TV analysts replay a foul and say...that was not a foul....and then I immediately assess....Hmmmm that player now has two fouls and has to come out the game......or three fouls...etc..etc..etc... and more often times than not, it is LA Lakers opponents that are getting the suspect foul calls on them and not a suspect foul call being made against the Lakers....Hmmmmm.

Folks, the company men still exist and they do appear to have a cozy relationship with the Lakers or calls tend to go the Lakers way.

That being said, your prediction about Howard foul trouble is highly probable as the NBA will see to it that Phil and LA gets it done yb any means neceassary.

I play, and I think I play hard defense all the time --

But the Lakers, and a number of pro teams, don't necessarily...

They get frustrated if they're not scoring. Houston series, e.g.

Odom, Gasol, Bynum especially.

1.  yes, thats what I said.

2.  yes, I have taken a few dribbles here and there.  I once made a basket at the local fair and won a stuffed animal!  Woohoo

3.  I didn't know Hedo, Rafer, Lewis, Lee, Pietrus were defenisve players of the any year.....

Guys that play defense hard no matter how they are doing on offense are specialist or effort players.  Those are players like Raja Bell, Bruce Bowen, Dennis Rodman, Trevor Ariza, Kendrick Perkins, LeBron James.....you get the drift.  Most of the players in the NBA put forth more effort on the defensive end when they are playing better offensively.  If you don't see that from game to game then there are some things you don't understand.  Game 6 with the Lakers and Denver is a prime example of this.  Look what they did offensively and look at the effort they put forth defensively.  Then look a the games when the baskets were going in and see how active they were on the other end of the court.

Are you switching on me?  What you said about Kobe is basically the same thing I said about Dwight.  Let him go off and lock down on everyone else.

Bro you need to watch basketball.  Where was KG during these playoffs?  And what did Kendrick do against Dwight?

Even if you lock down Dwight, you still have many players on Orlando's roster to score points.

You lock down Kobe (make him shoot shit %), Lakers will immense difficulty winning games.

Ace -

What I'm saying is that if the Lakers double team Dwight, Orlando's shooters will get open 3 point looks right?  Even if the Lakers make the rotation to the 1st guy, Orlando will swing to the 2nd or 3rd until its a open shot.  I'm guessing but I know for a fact that their percentages will be a lot higher if they are getting open looks as opposed to contested looks.  So if the Lakers stay at home with the shooters and let Dwight go off, that basically takes out the game of their 3 point shooters.  We all know Orlando loooves to shoot the 3 ball, if those guys are getting their normal looks, its only natural for them to start getting anxious and soon they start to take bad shots just because they didn't get to shoot in a while.  We often see a shooter or scorer take a horrible shot just because he hasn't shot in a few mins.  Almost as though he was thinking, man I haven't shot in over 6 mins.  So the next time he catches the ball he just throws up something that normally he wouldn't.  Hell I see Dwight do that from time to time.  He'll get the rebound outlet it, and someone will jack up a 3 just after he crosses half court.  He back on defense again, then the same thing happens 4, 5, 6 possessions in a row.  Guess what next time in the half court set, Dwight gets the ball and throws up a nasty ass 7 foot hook shot that has no chance of going in.  Why the hell did he do that?  He knows he could get a way better look.

Everyone knows the most of part of the game is scoring, which is true for probably 90% of the players.  If you're not having fun, because you're not scoring, its natural to lose interest and lost some intensity.

I never said he was a great defender, if you look at what I said.  I said he's an effort player that plays with the same amount of effort regardless of his offensive output.  Meaning that if he scores of not, his effort on the defensive end will be consistent.  Put it this way, these players have roles, which is defend and rebound.  If they stop doing those, they won't have jobs anymore.

I never argued that, in fact thats what my point.

You're exactly right, but I never said otherwise?  Did I ever say they would or could?

Exactly my point and I'm saying let him, but limit the rest.

This is exactly what I'm saying the Lakers should not do....you don't want to give the Magic open 3's.  Or you'll suffer the same fate as the Cavs.

Sorry for all the color codes, but it was best to show my reference to you post.

Also, I don't think you're really reading or comphrending my posts?  Or you're reading it just not understanding it......

I've been trying to tell that to everyone (friends & family)...but it seems no one will come off their Laker high! Orlando does not panic when down 20, and for the "live by three die by three" shit...THIS TEAM NEVER DIE BY THE THREE!

The Lakers can play a tight triangle and show Howard less than he has seen as far as paint. But it will be fun to watch as he has a great hook shot and will be the strongest player on the court. Kobe needs to light it up and get a big man working.

The Lakers will try to come out gunning in the first game and will want to win the Home Court. It will be a more conventional approach to the Magic in G1. The Magic will win in this series... will it be G1?

thatsagoodone, Great blog...you are almost spot on...Howard is not Shaq in his prime and he wont go for 40 or 50, the way a young Shaq did when teams did not double. And if i were the Magic i would be more worried about how to gaurd the black mamba! unlike dwight he can hurt you from anywhere on the court... he is a better passer out of doubles then dwight and unlike dwight, Kobe drops a high pct of his free throws. Lakers in 6!

They should just put DJ Mbenga on him in the 2nd and 3rd quarter after "Superman" enters from his rest and just foul him. Force him to make his free-throws as he did vs. Cleveland. Other than that, they really cannot stop him. Bynum still doesn't have footwork and Gasol is still soft. I was actually proud of Phil Jackson for yelling at him in game 5 when he yelled at him for not getting after it and giving up an offensive rebound.

But really we are not disagreeing, we are both agreeing that Orlando has too many good shooters for the Lakers to double team and leave open.  What I'm saying is the same as you're saying,

Dwight got punked so badly by the "soft" Pau Gasol and his rugged brother Marc in the gold medal game at last year's Olympics in Beijing.  He got destroyed in that game.

if Phil is smart he will play Dwight the same way Boston did... never double-team...

LA has the bodies to physical him out of the paint and not get easy looks, and this allows them to defend the 3 better...

you don't need to shutdown DH, or have a guy that can matchup with him and win 1 on 1... you need a team of guys who can rotate in, be physical as hell, and never let him get the ball inside of 6 feet from the hoop... he isn't a ballhandler and doesn't have any kind of shot outside of 3 feet...

of course, you also attack DH on the offensive end (something Cleveland was too stupid to figure out) and keep him in foul trouble at all times... you don't need to get foul calls on every play, you just need to get them once in awhile... so you keep driving into him... between Kobe, Odom and Gasol they have guys who can finish inside and draw DH on help defense...

i do not think Orlando matches up very well with LA, despite some recent success...
