Final Four write-ups

I will be leaving tomorrow for Detroit, so I'm posting my final four write-ups now. I don't condone gambling, so use this information however you wish. These are simply my opinions to give you the perspective of one person who follows college basketball closely.

Michigan St vs UConn  -4  o/u 133.5

For an inter-conference match-up, there is some good comparable data to go off of since UConn has played 3 of the other Big “10? tournament teams. They won all 3 with the following scores:

Wisconsin 72-60

Michigan 69-61

Purdue  72-60

See a pattern? Looks like Michigan St is in in for a 71-60 loss. This is only part of the reason why we like UConn. Yes, Michigan St should have a slight home court advantage and yes, I’ve been dogging them all tournament and they keep covering. Why will this time be different?

UConn should be able to defense MSU’s perimeter with Austrie, Price and Walker. They all have the quickness to stay with Lucas, Walton and Lucious. I do worry about the Thabeet/Souton match-up. Souton has been on a roll from the outside making the pick and pop play a weapon that UConn may not have an answer for. I am figuring the mere presence of Thabeet will rush Souton’s shots reducing his effectiveness.

The rebounding war inside will be fun to watch as both teams are physical and have dominated their opponents on the boards this year. I don’t think either team will have a decided advantage inside.

After beating Marquette, Jim Calhoun said this is one of the most talented teams he’s coached (even without Dyson).  They have skill and athleticism at every position. They do lack depth, but that shouldn’t come into play with the long tv timeouts.

Based on their talent level, determination and past success against the Big 10 this year, I like UConn to win by 10. It definitely won’t be easy though. As far as the total goes, it’s a very good number and I can see it going either way. If you need to pick one side or the other, I would take the over. The big stage, the urgency of being so close to a national championship, and high talent level should lead to above average points. Three of UConn’s 4 tournament games have gone over and the one under was by 1/2 point. MSU games are 2-2 against the total.

PREDICTION: UConn 74  MSU 64

Side: UConn -4   Total: no play

Villanova vs North Carolina  -7  o/u 159    7:40 pm

When it gets to the big stage games, I always feel at least one

underdog will win, or at least give the big favorite a challenge. Last

weekend, the pattern held true as both Saturday and Sunday had one

upset and one favorite win fairly easily. Saturday I feel Nova has the

best chance for the upset.

North Carolina is by far the most talented team in the tournament.

They have two main weaknesses on defense…guards who can penetrate and

giving up open 3’s. Oklahoma shot horrible (2-19) on the open 3’s and

they only lost by 12. Villanova shoots 36% from long distance and has

multiple threats from outside. Stokes is probably their only pure

shooter but Reynolds, Clark and Anderson can all get hot from long

range. Fisher and Reynolds will be able to penetrate the UNC defense to

help set up the open 3’s.

Villanova isn’t the greatest defensive team, so UNC may simply

outscore them. However, I’m going to rely on my best formula on this

one as it produces a system play of UNDER 158 predicting a final total

of 153. This formula has hit 65% of the time. Villanova hasn’t scored

less than 77 in their 4 tournament games and Carolina has only been

under 80 once, their last game vs Oklahoma (72).

The biggest advantage UNC has in this game is on the inside. Yes,

Dante Cunningham is a great talent, but he doesn’t have a lot of

interior help for defense and rebounding. I expect UNC to rely on

pounding the ball inside to Hansbrough, Davis and Thompson, which will

result in a slower paced game.

PREDICTION: UNC 79  Villanova 74

Side: Villanova +7   Total: Under 158.0 (2 unit POD)

My toes were crossed when I wrote that.     I'm usually not PC, but I felt like it today.

Interesting take on the UNC game. I locked them in to win the tourney before the Sweet 16 at +290, and I'm very concerned about this Nova matchup, as well. Hope you're right!

of this much i am certain:  UNC will win the title... i have no doubt about that...

in light of that, it would be hard to make a case for taking Villanova and just hoping to keep it under the number...

something to note... both favorites (UNC and UConn) are playing against teams that just knocked off the other best team in their conference (Duke and L'Ville)... point being: 1) they won't be caught off guard... and 2) the lines are soft because of these previous matchups...

UNC is not Duke, and UConn is not L'Ville... both UNC and UConn are better teams, and take advantage of what there is to learn from the Elite 8 games...

UConn - UNC final... very very little doubt about it...

'Nova is a good story, but they aren't taking down a team as balanced as UNC...

what about Nova's balance? How will UNC stop them from scoring? I can't wait to watch this game. Going to be one heck of a show.

i don't think it will be as good as everyone is thinking it will be... been watching the tourney for about 30 years now and what i know is that teams like Nova that get a big emotional upset to get to the final 4 usually don't fare well in the semi-final game against a powerhouse...

imo... Nova already won their championship... UNC is on a mission...

Only being a 2 point dog to Pitt and having beaten them in the regular season, I don't think Nova saw that as an upset. They are kids though, so you never know how their emotions are.
I definitely agree that UNC has had only one goal in mind all season and that's to win it all. That could work against them as well. The added pressure they put on themselves compared to Nova who if they are happy to just be there, will be much looser.

Emotions can work for and against teams in the same situation. It all depends on the kids themselves and how they react. That's why I try not to use emotion as a determining factor because I don't know these kids.

I can tell ya right now, UNC will NOT lose SU to Villa on Saturday.  Too much work,  heart, passion and effort has gone into this season to fall like they did to Kansas last year.

They might lose to Uconn in the final, but UNC will beat Villa SU, ATS not so sure, but comparing how they played Duke vs how UNC played Duke this year I would lean towards the heels.

Yes their defense can be spotty, they had OK down what about 20 points at one time in that game and let them crawl back to 10-12?  Villa is gonna have to knock down 40%+ from 3pt land to beat the heels.

I think Uconn is too much for MSU, hell I would love to see MSU play UNC again after that 30 point ass whipping earlier this year, UNC would have a huge mental advantage in that game but it's gonna be UNC vs Uconn and I'm not sure if the Heels can win that one or not.

your right about one thing, how kids react to emotions. ill get to that in a second. you mention how is unc going to stop nova balance and their guard penetration. not to mention if they get hot from the 3's. thats all good and done, but here is why i think unc can cover this.

kids react to all different types of emotions, they are after all college players and most of them have college stuff to deal with. but remember remember the 40-12 first half of last year final 4. do not think for a second that unc forgot that they got embarrassed by ku. just my two cents. great writeup

I don't think the spreads are soft.  Villanova is stronger than MichSt but get +7 while MichSt only get +4.  You always have to pay taking the favorites.  I have had my win and loss streaks in this tournament and I am sure that the spreads are not soft for this 2 games.
About emotions, all of them are as high as they can be.  UNC will have the toughest mind set of all 4 teams.
My guts tell me to pick Mich St +4 and UNC -7.

ur unc writeup is terrible did you see the oklahoma game????? they were up 21 and basically the game was over at that point unc relaxed and okl got on a little run. Yes the final margin was 12 but unc dominated from start to finish. unc -7 and over 159
hineygater says:

oklahoma had any shot they wanted against nc...they just couldn't make anything...nc does not play good defense..if you go at them and make them play defense AND make your shots...you have a chance..okla. looked overwhelmed with the situation and nervous...vill. cannot play that way and have a chance...go at them..you have nothing to lose.
