I would like to start by saying that this is really just a vent, a rant if you will. It's not intended for you specifically or anyone you may know. If you have input feel free to share it.
I am sick and tired of hearing about whether or not Michael Vick is “remorseful”, does he deserve a second chance? Blah blah blah! This has been racking my brain ever since Vick got out of prison. I’m starting to question whether people even know what remorseful means or not. Let me give you the definition. Remorse - deep and painful regret for wrongdoing; compunction. Now tell me…. Why on earth would Vick NOT REGRET what he did? What is he a heartless man? Look at everything he lost for over 2 years of his life. He was the highest paid QB in the league, and has 3 children with a loving mother. I’m sure he doesn’t regret what he did right? Idiots.
I saw an article about how Vick needs to show remorse through his actions. The title alone made me not want to even read it. What bothers me is that since Vick has been out of prison he has been working directly with youths and with the humane society to increase the awareness of dog fighting and to be a solution to the problem. So why are people still riding his tail? I don’t get it. The man has done everything right and people still protest him.
This is partly what is wrong with our judicial system. If you commit a crime you have to do the time. When doing the time you are repaying your debt to society, you are basically admitting your faults and giving up your life in an effort to right your wrongs. Often times when you get out of prison there is absolutely no support system to turn to which is why most inmates return back to prison. Luckily for Michael Vick he has an incredible supporting cast in Tony Dungy, Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb and the entire Eagles organization.
One of the biggest problems I have with this whole Vick situation actually has nothing to do with Vick. What bothers me is Donte Stallworth. Stallworth killed a man while drunk driving. Whether he was in the crosswalk or not, the man was still killed by a drunken Stallworth. Now I will say that I like Stallworth a lot, just like Vick; but Stallworth got off with a slap on the wrist. HE KILLED A MAN, TOOK A HUMAN LIFE.
What did Stallworth get? A 30 day prison sentence which he didn’t even serve in full and he settled with the family of the deceased for an undisclosed amount of money. What he should have got was a 1 year prison sentence at least, just like his 1 year suspension from the NFL.
I am not condoning what Vick did, not one bit. I am an animal lover just like most people in this country. But let me put it to you like this. What if Vick raised wild wolves and he used them to fight, would people be just as mad? In this case he would be killing wild animals for fun right?
If you agree with that than here’s another question I have to ask. Do you, or how many people do you know hunt birds, coyotes, wild hogs, turkeys, deer, elk, moose, etc, etc, etc? Ever go fishing, catch a fish that died and you didn’t eat it? Why are these people not thrown in jail? They are killing animals for fun as well. I know what you’re going to say, they are killed so you can eat them right?
What if Vick killed the dogs and ate them? Would that be okay? In Vick’s case he was using dogs, a typical house pet, but yet to Vick they were just as wild as anything else a hunter with a gun would go after. In some county’s dogs are delicacies.
Hunting is legal because we say it is legal. People need a permit to hunt; they also need a gun or a bow, or some sort of mechanized device to kill an animal. Don’t hunters hurt animals more than Vick ever did? Are they reported and thrown in jail when they kill an animal? NO.
Let me further my point by saying this as well. Put yourself in Vicks shoes. You just got out of prison and you’re trying to get your life back together, yet people are still all over your back after you already served your time. You would never put yourself in a situation where you would go to prison, right?
Guess what, you probably do every single day. Have you ever smoked weed? Have you ever drank and drove? Have you ever drunk alcohol while under age? Have you ever sold drugs, or done any drugs? Ever run a stop sign, a red light, speeding, raced? The list can go on and on and on. Now you’re thinking “I cannot go to jail for that stuff.” WRONG, guess again!
You won’t go to jail the first time you get caught, probably not the second time either…. Heck maybe even not the third time. If you do it enough times and get caught you definitely will. I’m willing to bet that most of the reporters asking Vick the questions and even the protesters have done something illegal before, but they were not caught; they never suffered the consequences of their actions. Many of them probably did things that would get them thrown in jail instantly. Who do they think they are? They are not perfect! They sure act like they are though.
The point I am trying to make is that people need to pull their heads out of there arses and stop acting like their crap does not stink. We all make mistakes, we are not perfect, and no one is. Let the man have his second chance in peace and stop protesting what he did in the past. What he did can never be changed, he has to deal with 2 years off of his life – YOU DON’T. He can only change the future if you people would let him. Let the man be, he’s served his time.
GL this season to all.
